This year’s WWE Battleground will include the infamous Punjabi Prison Match. It will involve a history-books worthy match between Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton for the WWE title because the Punjabi Prison Match has not been done for many years. So, if you have forgotten about the Punjabi Prison Match, let us get a little more familiar with this match before the classic Battleground Pay-Per-View!
When Was the Last Punjabi Prison Match?
Jinder Mahal got to choose the match for WWE Battleground. Naturally, he chose the Punjabi Prison Match, which has only been held twice in WWE history and will more likely than not play in his favour. The last WWE prison match even dates back to ten years ago, where the Great Khali took on Batista at No Mercy.
Before the Punjabi Cage Match between Batista and the Great Khali, there was only one other Punjabi Cage Match. The match took place at Great American Bash in 2006, where the Undertaker faced the Big Show.
Is the Punjabi Prison Match Comparable to a Steel Cage, Hell in a Cell or the Elimination Chamber?
The Punjabi Prison used in a Punjabi Prison Match is quite different from the steel cages used in Hell in a Cell and the Elimination Chamber. The Punjabi Prison consists of two cages. The first one is similar to the steel cage but made from bamboo sticks. The second cage is a larger octagon, which has some bamboo spikes on the top of it.
How Does a Participant Win the Punjabi Prison Match?
Winning a Punjabi Prison Match is a lot more difficult than winning the traditional steel cage match. To win a traditional match, participants can win with a pinfall, submission or by climbing out of the ring. However, to win a Punjabi Prison Match, participants must escape both cages.
There are some additional rules to escaping the Punjabi Prison too. Superstars have to walk through a door that leads to the outer cage during the allotted time. If they fail to do so, the door will be locked for good. There is a total of four doors. If all four doors are closed, the superstar will have to climb over the inner cage.
Of course, once superstars have escaped the inner cage, they must also escape the outer cage. Unfortunately for them, there is only one way to escape it, by climbing over it.
Is the Punjabi Prison Match More Beneficial for Jinder Mahal?
There is a good reason why Jinder Mahal chose the Punjabi Prison Match because it is a no disqualification match as well; this means that Jinder Mahal can use his allies “the Singh Brothers” to his benefit.
So, the Punjabi Prison Match could mean that Jinder Mahal will retain his title again. I for one am glad for it, but I think the Punjabi Prison Match may deliver some surprises.
