Beyoncé was visibly stunned last night when she won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards with her country music album “Cowboy Carter.”
Notably, the actual country organization, the Country Music Awards, didn’t even nominate the album. Makes you wonder…
Beyoncé Wins Album Of The Year
It should be noted that Beyoncé had been nominated for Album of the Year four times. However, she had never won before Sunday night.
When she won the award, Beyoncé became the first black woman to take home the title in the 21st century, and she wasted no time making note of that fact. Indeed, the last black woman to win Album of the Year was Lauryn Hill, who won 26 years ago with “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”
“It’s been many, many years,” Beyoncé, 43, said in her speech. “I want to dedicate this to Ms. Martell.”
This was a reference to Linda Martell, the performer who became the first black woman to play the Grand Ole Opry.
“I hope we just keep pushing forward and opening doors,” Beyoncé added.
In order to win this award, Beyoncé beat out Andre 3000, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Jacob Collier, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and, incredibly, Taylor Swift.
“We finally saw it happen,” host Trevor Noah said as he closed out the show. “Beyoncé has won Album of the Year … she had 99 nominations.”

LAFD Presents Grammy Award
The award was presented to Beyoncé by members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Fire chief Anthony C. Marrone began his speech by praising the “heroes” and “sheroes” of the LAFD who have spent the past few weeks battling the Los Angeles wildfires.
“This is a tremendous honor and privilege to be in the company of such talented music industry professionals,” he said.
“As fire chief, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank [the] first responders who came from near and far to battle this wildfire siege,” he continued. “In the midst of unprecedented fire conditions, their selfless acts of courage and commitment were nothing short of inspiring.”

Beyoncé Wins Best Country Music Album
Earlier in the night, Beyoncé was shocked to win the Grammy Award for best country music album.
“I was not expecting this, I want to thank God – oh my God – that I’m able to still do what I still love after so many years,” she said in her acceptance speech. “I think sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists and I just want to encourage people to do what their passionate about. Stay persistent.”
“I’d like to thank my beautiful family, all of the artists that were collaborators, thank you, this wouldn’t have been this album without you,” Beyoncé continued. “God again, and I’m still in shock … and thank you again for this honor.”
After the awards show ended, Beyoncé gave fans some updates about her Cowboy Carter Tour. After the tour kicks off in April, Beyoncé will be heading to Los Angeles, Chicago, London, New York, Paris, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Houston.
