Children these days live in a bubble. When I was a kid, we ventured out on our own. Actually, I would be told to get out of the house and not to come back until it was time for dinner. But, things are different now and everyone is expected to be a helicopter parent.
One South Carolina woman learned this the hard way when she let her 9 year old nephew and 3 year old son walk a quarter of a mile to McDonald’s. A quarter of a mile is to the end of my street! Something we would have done as kids got Tiesha Mesha Hillstock arrested!
When I was 9, I could have handled walking 1/4 of a mile with a 3 year old. I was babysitting four kids by age 10! Online comments have been mostly positive for the “free range” mom. This highlights how people are fed up with the nanny state.
“In order for children to grow up to be responsible adults they need the opportunity to be able to do things unsupervised without adults including take some level of risk,” one man, named Tom, wrote. “According to the story the kids crossed the street without incident and were acting responsibly so now we want to punish them for that? What kind of message does that send? This is why we have college-aged adults whining about safe spaces and who can’t handle any type of confrontation.”
Free Range Parenting is gaining a bit more traction. As we see so many young adults not being able to make decisions or look to their parents for solutions, we need to find ways to reverse this trend. You can watch a discussion about this below.
