After a long 20-year hiatus, fans finally have their favorite animated family back. With The Simpsons movie 2 confirmed, with the first poster reveal and a release date, fans are gearing up to revisit their favorite adult comedy franchise.
20th Century Studios and Disney confirmed the information on Monday, September 29, revealing a first look at the movie, with a release date set for July 23, 2017. While that’s a long wait, it’ll be worth it.
The movie is based on Fox’s popular and long-running animated sitcom series that follows the lives of Homer, Marge, and their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The first film was released in 2007, and saw Homer accidentally pollute the water supply of Springfield and then attempt to save his family and city, which has been sealed off under a huge glass dome.

While the first movie was released in 2007, the actual Simpsons series has been running for a lot longer, first appearing in 1987 as cartoon shorts on another US TV show, The Tracey Ullman Show, before getting their own show two years later. The show, created by Matt Groening, has now aired for 37 seasons and was recently renewed for its 40th, which will air in 2028/29.
The first film was also a huge success, earning $536 million at the global box office against a $75 million budget.
After dozens of seasons and one movie since the show’s inception, showrunner Matt Selman says that streaming has helped the series not only remain relevant in the cultural conversation but also gain new fans. “Now instead of kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever,” Selman told Variety. “Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us. Not that we realized we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it.”
