Boy, do I have a treat for you today! We are looking at the top 10 Homer Simpson moments, from the hilarious to the heartwarming! However, to keep this list a bit more organized, we are only allowing episodes from the 90s. To be honest, making this list was really hard, since Homer has had so many funny moments that it was tricky to narrow it down.
Before you get all “Angry Dad” that your favorite moment has not been included, grab yourself a Duff, some ice cream with miniature pies in it, and come up with your own epic list of the best Homer Simpson moments!
Number 10 – Bart on the Road, Season 7, Episode 20
First up we have a great episode that has Homer and Lisa spending some real quality time together. However, the catalyst for this episode is that Bart gets a driver’s license and he, Millhouse, Martin, and Nelson end up stranded. Lisa tells Homer this news, but she makes him promise he won’t get mad.
Cue Homer going into a radiation suit, screaming his head off, and calmly coming out and stating, “I will send Bart the money to fly home, then I will murder him“. The whole scene is hilarious and while the rant itself is the highlight, a huge reason that I love this episode is that it always feels a bit more special when you get to see Homer and Lisa have some meaningful interaction with each other.
Number 9 – Mom and Pop Art, Season 10, Episode 19
“Mom and Pop Art” from season 10 had to make this top 10 Homer Simpson moments list! This episode sees Homer become a big deal in the local art scene, but it’s the way he gets there that makes this such a great moment.
Homer is trying to build his dream barbecue in the backyard, but in typical Homer fashion, it goes wrong, and he gets hilariously angry. The barbecue instructions get covered in cement, leading to Homer having to use the French ones and yelling out this iconic line: “Le Grille? What the hell is that?” It cracks me up every time, as does Homer’s freakout which leads to his messed up barbecue being considered a piece of art.
Number 8 – King of the Hill, Season 9, Episode 23
What makes season 9’s “King of the Hill” such a great entry on this list is that it’s a Homer-centric episode and he has multiple awesome moments here. First of all, he is embarrassed at a picnic for being so out of shape, and this leads to him trying to get fit. Cue Homer going to an all night gym and saying, “Gym? What’s a gym?”
Add to this McBain himself being Homer’s training buddy and telling him that he needs to wipe his sweat off the machine. Plus, this episode sees Homer get addicted to these terrible apple sauce “health bars” leading the family man to try and climb a dangerous mountain. On this trek there are so many great moments: Homer being pulled by his assistants, finding out that the bars are made of old newspaper, and riding a dead body down the mountain like a sled! Also, a shoutout to old Abe Simpson for his hilarious line: “I fell 8,000 feet onto a pile of jagged rocks! Of course, folks were tougher in those days. I was jitterbugging that very night!”
Number 7 – Marge vs. The Monorail, Season 4, Episode 12
There are so many classic moments here that I had to have this on my top 10 Homer Simpson moments of the 90s list! To start with, we get the awesome opening scene where Homer sings his little song to the Flintstones music, complete with him hitting a chestnut tree!
In the main story, Springfield decides that it’s going to build a monorail system thanks to the predations of a huckster, and Homer ends up being hired as the conductor. Homer locking his keys inside and having to break in is hilarious, as is him seeing Bart as a potential anchor. However, my favorite Homer line here is when Marge calls him and tells him that she has a scientist who can help, which results in Homer thinking that Batman is coming to the rescue! While not just a Homer moment, we also get the awesome Monorail song here too.
Number 6 – Bart’s Inner Child, Season 5, Episode 7
This is more of a Bart episode where Bart’s “do whatever the heck he wants to” attitude is adopted by the whole town – which as you would expect, leads to chaos. Yet, there is an absolutely classic and iconic Homer Simpson moment in this episode that all The Simpsons fans will laugh about when they remember.
Homer is looking at the free stuff in the local paper and sees that someone is offering a free trampoline. Homer freaks out, yelling, “Oh my God, tramampoline, trambampoline” before running to Krusty to get said trampoline. Yet the hilarity does not stop there! This is like a cursed trampoline that Homer cannot get rid of, which leads to many more hilarious moments in this episode.
Number 5 – Mr. Plow, Season 4, Episode 9
As soon as you read “Mr. Plow,” you started singing the song in your head, didn’t you? In this episode, Homer ends up buying a snow plow and starting his own snow plow business. He comes up with the name Mr. Plow and he is a hit! His TV jingle is one of the best and most memorable Simpson tunes of all time and it even features a classic Bart moment where he asks Homer, “You are fully bonded and licensed by the city, aren’t you Mr. Plow?” To which Homer replies with his classic, “Shut up boy”.
What is neat about this episode is that while most of us remember it for that fun song and Homer dressed as Mr. Plow, this is also one of the best Barney episodes as well. We get some great interaction with Homer and Barney, such as Barney shooting out Homer’s tires!
Number 4 – The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson, Season 9, Episode 1
“The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson” is another classic that deserves attention! Lovable town drunk Barney borrows Homer’s car and ends up getting it clamped in New York, leading to Homer and the rest of the Simpsons clan taking a trip to the Big Apple to get it back.
Homer hates New York! We get a great flashback of him there when he was younger, getting on the wrong side of a pimp. Homer also ends up losing it and trying to drive home with a boot on his car, causing havoc in the process. While there are so many great moments in this episode, Homer losing it and using a jackhammer on the clamp is the icing on the cake, plus him getting pelted with medical waste as they try to drive home from New York City!
Number 3 – Mayored to the Mob, Season 10, Episode 9
As a huge Star Wars geek, I loved any time The Simpsons and Star Wars would have any kind of crossover. In this episode, Homer ends up becoming a bodyguard. We get to see him training, which is hilarious in its own right, but it’s when he takes a job trying to protect Mayor Quimby from local mob boss Fat Tony that things really heat up.
Two particularly hilarious moments come up: Homer asking one of the kids to start up the car in case there is a bomb in it, and his disappointed “Oh, Fat Tony” when Fat Tony is pummeling Mayor Quimby with a baseball bat. Pure gold! However, the absolute best Homer Simpson moment in this episode is where he is doing “The Bodyguard” walk while carrying Mark Hammill, kicking a bunch of fans in the stomach as he goes, great and hilarious stuff indeed!
Number 2 – Homer the Heretic, Season 4, Episode 3
Next up we have an all time classic of a Simpsons episode, “Homer the Heretic.” Homer is sick and tired of having to get up and go to Church every Sunday so he snaps and says he’s not going anymore. Homer ends up having the best Sunday of his life and decides that he’s done with Church forever!
My favorite moment in this episode is when Homer burns the house down and Flanders has to save him. Flanders throws Homer out of the window “safely to the mattress below” only for Homer to land safely on the mattress and bounce straight back in the window! We also get a great moment after this with Homer trying to scam the insurance agent, who tells Homer, “I’m sorry, this policy only covers actual losses. Not made up stuff”.
Number 1 – Bart The Daredevil, Season 2, Episode 8
Granted, this episode stars Bart, who after seeing the heroic Lance Murdock in action vows to become a daredevil. Bart does all kinds of stunts and becomes a big deal and then states that he is going to jump Springfield Gorge on his skateboard. Lisa tells Homer and he freaks!
This actually leads to a pretty good moment of parenting by Homer as he tries to reason with Bart, only for Bart to lie and head to the Gorge anyway. Cue one of the greatest moments in not just Simpsons, but TV history! Homer stops Bart and exclaims that he is going to jump the Gorge to show Bart how dangerous it is. Homer falls as you would expect, and gets brutally hurt as he does. That is not the hilarious part, although it is funny. An ambulance saves Homer but crashes into a tree and then he falls all over again!
