Last week, we reported that the new Disney live-action remake of the classic 1937 animated movieSnow White had flopped at the box office. Now, it’s been revealed that in the wake of this catastrophe, Disney has decided to shelve another live-action princess remake that was in the works.

Disney Shelves Tangled Remake

Disney has reportedly put a planned remake of the 2010 Rapunzel movie Tangled on hold after Snow White bombed at the box office. The film was already in development, and Michael Gracey had even signed on to direct it.

Though the Tangled remake was only in the pre-production stages, meetings had already taken place with potential stars. According to Deadline, the original 2010 animated movie “followed the magically long-haired Rapunzel, who had spent her entire life in a tower. But now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.”

We can only imagine what Disney would have done to that story in a live-action remake!

Snow White Bombs At Box Office

Disney may have made the smart move in shelving this Tangled remake, given how poorly Snow White has performed at the box office. Indeed, since debuting on March 21, Snow White has only grossed $69 million domestically and $145 million worldwide. The movie was made on a massive budget of $270 million. It’s highly unlikely at this point that Snow White will even come close to making that money back, making the film a huge financial loss for Disney.

Much of the blame for Snow White flopping has been placed on the film’s star Rachel Zegler, who played the titular role. Zegler has made various controversial comments eluding to this remake being a politically-correct rebrand of the original 1937 movie.

“The original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so,” Zegler previously said.

“There’s a big focus on her love story with the guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird,” she added. “So we didn’t do that this time.”

Joe Rogan Weighs In

Earlier this week, however, the popular podcast host Joe Rogan expressed his belief that there were other factors that led to Snow White flopping as well.

“If you notice the spin on it, they’re putting it all on her. I mean, I’m sure she sucks, but she is very young. She didn’t write that script though, right? And I don’t think she made the ‘no dwarves’ decision, that was Sir Peter Dinklage,” began Rogan’s guest, the comedian Kurt Metzger.

This was a reference to the Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage saying that it would be offensive for real little people to play the iconic dwarves in Snow White. After he made these comments, Disney used CGI to make the dwarves in the remake.

“Oh, wow, that does look bad,” Rogan said as he looked at the CGI dwarves. “Oh, it doesn’t look real at all.”

“Wait, how much did this cost?” he added. “They spent 250 million bucks making that movie?”

Zegler Embodies Remake’s Message

“Imagine you spent $250 million, and you get some young girl, and you don’t kind of talk to her about like, ‘Hey, you know, don’t get political. You’re young, and I know you have opinions about things, but this should be just about the movie,’” Rogan continued.

Metzger chimed back in to defend Zegler by pointing out that her attitude embodies the remake’s message.

“They wrote a script that’s telling girls, ‘I don’t need nobody to tell me, I’m a 20-year-old girl, so obviously I should run my mouth all the time,'” he stated.

Watch them talk more about this in the video below.

In the end, Disney likely made the right choice in shelving their Tangled remake after this Snow White debacle. Perhaps Disney should consider giving up on remakes moving forward, and instead focus on some new stories!
