Kevin Costner’s new passion project, Horizon, has spelled trouble not only at the box office but in the legal world, too. The newest Western, which Costner poured millions into, is now the focus of a legal war. The battle is allegedly between New Line Cinema, Horizon Series, and City National Bank.

New Line Cinema vs. Horizon Series

City National Bank has filed arbitration claims against both New Line Cinema and Horizon Series (Costner’s loan-out firm). In a crossclaim, New Line is seeking repayment from Horizon Series as part of its defense, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The two production companies reportedly had a deal to repay a portion of the financing. New Line claims they have covered a portion of the payment that their partner, Horizon Series, didn’t pay, while City National Bank believes it’s owed more.

Now, New Line and Horizon Series are in a stalemate over the co-financing agreement, completely shattering future dreams of the four-part film series.

Future Horizon Films

While Costner planned Horizon to be a four-part film series, the Chapter 1 installment bombed at the box office. Kevin Costner directed, starred in, co-wrote, and partially financed the film himself. However, Horizon only brought in a mere $11 million during its opening week compared to a $100 million production bill.

Chapter 2 was supposed to be released seven weeks after the debut film. However, poor monetary turnout has pushed the release date to an unknown time. It spells disaster for Chapters 3 and 4, especially since Chapter 3 started filming, despite allegedly not being fully financed.

The second film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, but has not yet gotten a wide theatrical release. Some sources say the film may appear on the big screen in 2025, but there is no date yet.

Costner Needs Backing

Despite the precarious position, Costner hopes his dream film series will be produced. His ideal backers? Someone with pockets deep enough to finance it.

On finding the financial support, Costner said, “I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about—they’re all hiding in the shadows. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to make it, and then I’m going to make the fourth one…”

Release Dates?

Fans of Kevin Costner can watch Chapter 1 on Netflix, MAX, and several other platforms, but what about Chapter 2? Mentioned earlier, the film has been created and even premiered at the Venice Film Festival. However, it has not yet reached the general audience.

When asked about the second chapter, Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays Diamond Kittredge, stated: “I believe it’s coming pretty soon. I think they’re kind of massaging what’s going on with it, but I actually, as of now, haven’t heard anything…I’m really excited for people to see it…because it is a film that I feel like we all put so much heart and passion into.”
