Behind the Scenes
James L. Brooks wrote and directed the film. James L. Brooks, p.g.a., Richard Sakai, p.g.a., Julie Ansell, p.g.a., and Jennifer Brooks produced the film.
This is Brooks’ first film as a director since 2010’s How Do You Know. In 1984, he won three Oscars for Terms of Endearment, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,
Brooks commented that the film is set in 2008 and is “about how to not make government service and political office something any sane person would flee from.”
He went on to say, “In a movie like this, you’ve got to figure out what the heroism is, and chase that. What is it really that makes you a fine person? Is it a character that’s worth supporting for an entire movie? That’s what you aim for.”
When Does Ella McCay Premiere?
Ella McCay hits theaters on December 12th, 2025.
What Happens in the Trailer?
The trailer opens with Julie Kavner’s character, who voices Marge in The Simpsons. She looks at the camera and says, “I’m here to provide facts about Ella McCay. I’ve worked for her ever since she finished law school, so I’m not exactly neutral. I’m nuts about her.”
The trailer cuts to a scene of Ella stepping out of a car and into her aunt Helen’s arms, and also the problem that her estranged father has re-entered her life. As she struggles to find balance with her father and not overcrowd her brother, Ella must learn how to let out the screams and find her peace within the world of a governor.
The trailer ends with Ella (Mackey) and her aunt Helen (Curtis) sharing a few screams back and forth to let out their anger and laugh at each other.
