When Does Avatar: Fire and Ash Come Out?
Avatar: Fire and Ash premieres on December 19th, 2025. As for the fourth and fifth installments of the franchise, they premiere on December 21st, 2029, and December 19th, 2031, respectively.
What is Avatar: Fire and Ash About?
Avatar: Fire and Ash starts right after the second film, which focused on the Sully family as they teamed up with Pandora’s water tribe to fight against the Resources Development Administration.
The new film introduces two new tribes to the fray: the soaring Wind Traders and their rivals, the Fire People. The Wind Traders travel the skies on contraptions similar to hot air balloons. The Fire People ride on flying beasts.
The Sully family gets pulled into the dispute, especially since the Fire People are those who defected from Jake’s Na’vi clan and their nature-worshipping religion.
The leader of the Fire People clan is Varang, played by Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones).
In a brief preview at CinemaCon in April, Sully says to Neytiri, “We can not live like this, baby. We can not live with this hate.”

James Cameron’s Thoughts About the Film
While we haven’t got much information about the third film, James Cameron shed some light in recent interviews. Cameron discussed the lead antagonist, Varang, in an interview with Empire magazine in January.
“Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She’s hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil. One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic. We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm.”
In a later interview in April, Cameron discussed the Sully family’s position on everything. “The Sully family are really put through the ringer on this one as they face not only the human invaders, but new adversaries: the Ash People.”
Success of Past Films
Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water both hit big at the box office. Each film grossed over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. This feat made them the first and third most commercially successful films of all time worldwide.
If Fire and Ash can repeat the pattern, the franchise will be the only one to have three films cross the $2 billion threshold.
