Thomas Manning has gone where no man has gone before. The Massachusetts man got a penile transplant last week.

Only one other man has a transplanted penis. That man lives in South Africa. And as the first American to benefit from a new member, Manning is going very public with his story in an attempt to help others – particularly injured service members.

Manning’s penis was amputated when he had cancer in 2012. He wanted a transplant immediately, even though they weren’t done at the time. His physicians are hopeful that Manning will have full use of his new organ.

Manning is particularly hoping that shining a spotlight on this surgery so it will be made widely available to those who had genital injuries while serving our country. 1,367 male service members who survived with genitourinary injuries between 2001 and 2013 according to the Department of Defense Trauma Registry.

Manning, who is 64 and single, is quite open about the procedure and his recovery. Listen to him in his own words in the video below.
