The director of the recent Barbie movie, Greta Gerwig, has been working on a Chronicles of Narnia adaptation. But unfortunately, Greta Gerwig’s gender-swap decision has caused some backlash from fans.
Recent reports have confirmed that Meryl Streep will be the voice of Aslan in the film.

Chronicles of Narnia is based on novels written by C.S. Lewis, and in them, Aslan is a talking lion who serves as Narnia’s guardian. For reference, in the original movies released from 2005 to 2010, Aslan was voiced by Liam Neeson.

Unfortunately, Greta Gerwig’s gender-swap decision has caused hardcore fans to share their negative thoughts. One fan posted on X, asking if “Aslan is a male lion?”
But Aslan is a male lion? No hate to Meryl Streep, she is a legend. Glad this is only a rumour so far.

Another fan suggests that there is no reason to have a gender swap unless it’s to “deliberately subvert C.S. Lewis.”

Some fans are more confused than they are frustrated, with one fan asking bluntly “Why do we feel the need to gender-swap Aslan?”
Meryl Streep is great! But why do they feel the need to gender-swap Aslan?

Lewis was a devout Christian, and he based Aslan, the guardian of Narnia, as a divine being and sort-of stand-in for Jesus Christ. because of this, many of the die-hard fans are Christian.
Instant flop. Aslan is Jesus. Jesus was a man.

Some fans even suggest that Gerwig might not be aware that Aslan represents Jesus, and are hoping that the rumors stay rumors, and a change will be made.
It’s clear that hardcore fans are concerned, and fairly uninterested to see the upcoming film become “woke”, as they want a true adaptation, not a rework that aligns with modern beliefs.
Greta Gerwig’s work in the Barbie movie was captivating, to say the least. It was the ultimate experience for women everywhere and completely embodied the “feminist bimbo” stereotype proudly.
But while fans were drawn in by Gerwig’s work in Barbie, it seems that the adaptation of Chronicles of Narnia might not be the best place to continue that movement. While it’s safe to say that Gerwig is not completely reworking the story, it’s clear that fans want Gerwig to stick true to the story rather than adding her details.
