Any skilled fisherman knows that anything can happen at sea. However, some sports fishermen got the shock of a lifetime when a great white shark they hooked dragged their boat for about two miles in the San Francisco Bay.

Great White Shark near Alcatraz

They were out fishing for sevengill and soupfin sharks and instead, they found something straight out of Jaws. Joey Gamez, who owns Golden State Sportfishing said they were near Alcatraz when the first got a sharp tug on the line. They knew they were dealing with something big.

He and the six others on board thought they got a sevengill, so they lifted the boat’s anchor while they reeled it in. But, that’s not what happened. The shark they caught took everyone on the 26-foot-boat on a bit of ride. Gamez estimates the shark is between six and eight feet. Thankfully, the outcome was positive for all involved. Although the shark was released, these fishermen have earned some serious bragging rights.

“I really didn’t get a good look at it,” Gamez said. “I was kind of worried about getting it off the hook.”

The great white shark took the boat on a ride for an hour before Gamez was finally able to cut the line and free it.

Because of the drama of being led astray by their catch, it took them a while to determine what they had caught. In the video below, much to everyone’s dismay, they discovered it was a great white shark. This is something right out of a movie and these men are going to have a heck of a story to tell their grandchildren!

“First time I’ve had to pull an anchor on a shark,” Gamez can be heard saying in the video. “Not sure what it is, but it’s a big one.”
