It’s been two years since The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released. The movie quickly became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, and thankfully, there might be more in the works for fans in the future.

Universal may have subtly announced that a Donkey Kong movie might be coming. After the original movie premiered in 2023 with colorful animation featuring voices from Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen telling the nostalgic and iconic story of the video game, fans haven’t gotten enough.
While there have been some minor updates on The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, fans are even more eager to learn about the potential spin-off movie. The news came when Universal Pictures announced that they acquired the film copyright for an untitled Donkey Kong movie, which could be the first of several spinoffs in Nintendo’s budding movie franchise.
Though there hasn’t been any official announcement as of yet, fans are hopeful to see something soon. This spinoff project has been highly speculated amount fans since The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduction of Donkey Kong, which is voiced by Seth Rogen.
And with Donkey Kong Bonanza releasing on Switch 2, it’s the perfect time to get this project going. Although fans are likely to see Donkey Kong’s story play out like his older games. The first Donkey Kong game was released in 1981 as a platform game where he threw barrels down to prevent Mario, at the time Jumpman, from climbing up the various platforms and ladders.

What’s even more exciting is that this could just be one of the many spinoffs, as the movie sets up numerous options. Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, has a large chance of receiving her movie as well, even Yoshi with his collection of video games.
The franchise has so much potential with a plethora of content to choose from. Especially with a live-action Zelda movie on the way, die-hard video game fans and movie buffs are excited to see what’s in store.
