Construction workers building a new hotel in Old Town Alexandria in Virginia made a surprising discovery. After calling in archeologist Francine Bromberg, it was determined they had unearthed an 18th century ship.
This area used to be in the Potomac River before it was backfilled to create the current waterfront.
Bromberg says this Revolutionary War era ship was built sometime between 1775 and 1798. A water tank will be used to stabilize the wood so Bromberg can go to work on figuring out the specifics of this new discovery.
But, this isn’t the first time in recent history that an 18th century ship has been unearthed during construction. A similar thing happened in 2010 on the site of the World Trade Center, as you can see in the video below.
