A man who broke into an Alabama home is clinging to life after sustaining a gunshot to the head by the homeowner who was protecting his family. This is another 2A success story where a good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy. And today, the homeowner’s wife and young child are alive and safe.

Charles Virgil Bowne lives in the same neighborhood as the home that he broke into. The 39-year-old was taken by helicopter to the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds to the head, bicep, shoulder, and left leg at 4:45 AM on Monday morning.

2A Saves Lives

Crime doesn’t pay and it might end up costing Bowne his life.

Sheriff Bill Franklin painted a picture that Bowne broke into the home to rob the young family. Instead, the wannabe thief was greeted with gunfire. He picked the wrong house.

“I got a young couple in their 20s; daddy, momma and a young child at home when daddy hears a commotion in the front of the house,” Sheriff Franklin reports. “He arms himself with a 9 mm handgun and goes to investigate. He sees Mr. Bowne standing in the living room and Mr. Bowne tells him ‘Give me you (stuff).’ Mr. Bowne then makes a move like he’s going into his front pocket and the homeowner fires several times.

“There was evidence of forced entry into the home,” Franklin continued. “We searched Mr. Bowne and didn’t find a weapon, but we did find a crack pipe tucked into his sock.”

Thankfully, Sheriff Franklin is an avid proponent of self defense. He issued a statement indicating that this young homeowner did the right thing in exercising his 2A rights.

“We certainly won’t be pursuing any charges against the man,” the sheriff said. “This man was defending his home and his family. We still operate from the premise in Elmore County that a man’s home is his castle. The grand jury will review the case, but we don’t expect charges to be coming.”

Criminal With History

Charles Virgil Bowne has a criminal history and was recently released from an Indiana prison where he was being held on theft charges.

Bowne certainly was a risk to the community as this wasn’t even the first neighbor who Bowne attempted to rob.

It wasn’t even 24 hours earlier when another neighbor filed a complaint that Bowne entered his bedroom at 5:30 AM.

“This neighbor said he woke up to find Mr. Bowne standing over his bed,” Sheriff Franklin said. “Mr. Bowne drew back his fist several times while yelling ‘What’s up?’ at the man, making a motion like he was going to strike the man.

“Mr. Bowne was lucky he wasn’t shot Sunday morning,” Sheriff Franklin noted.

After being shot in the head during the home invasion early Monday, this repeat criminal might be heading to the morgue instead of heading back to prison.

2A Saves Lives

Every American has the right to defend our homes and our families. The Second Amendment gives us that right.

Thankfully, Sheriff Franklin agrees. As the Sheriff said, “This man was defending his home and his family.”

Law abiding citizens should not be at the mercy of criminals. It is our right not to live in fear.

So long as there are bad guys, America will need good guys with guns.
