A GoFundMe page that was set up to raise money for the family of one of the construction workers who was killed in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland in the early hours of Tuesday morning has surpassed its goal in less than one day.

GoFundMe For Key Bridge Victim

Jose Mynor Lopez, 35, was one of six construction workers who were killed in the collapse of the bridge, which occurred when a container ship struck one of its pillars. Lopez and his fellow workers had been fixing potholes on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

“We are reaching out to you on behalf of a devastated family who tragically lost their beloved husband name Jose Mynor Lopez from Guatemala of 35 years old and father in the Keybridge Disaster incident,” the GoFundMe page reads. “Our hearts ache for the family left behind – a devoted wife and three beautiful children, ages 17, 8 and 5 who now face an uncertain future without their main provider and pillar of strength.”

“The Keybridge Disaster took away not just a life, but the stability and security this family once knew,” it continues. “As the sole breadwinner, the husband worked tirelessly to ensure his family had everything they needed. His sudden absence has left a void that cannot be filled, both emotionally and financially.”

The GoFundMe went on to say that Lopez’s “family is grappling with the immense challenge of rebuilding their lives from the ground up. From funeral expenses to daily necessities, every aspect of their lives has been disrupted by this devastating loss. The road ahead is daunting, but with your support, we can help alleviate some of the burden they face.”

“Your donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in the lives of this grieving family. It will provide them with the essential resources they need to navigate through this difficult time and move forward with hope and resilience,” it adds. “Together, we can show them that they are not alone in their sorrow and that there is a community of caring individuals standing by their side.”

GoFundMe Surpasses Goal

The goal of the page was to raise $25,000 for the Lopez family, but at the time of this writing, it has already raised over $27,000.

“My heart is with this family as they grieve the loss of their loved one,” one person who donated commented, with another adding, “My heart goes out to this family. I hope that in some small way these donations help. You are loved.”

“So very sorry,” a third donor wrote. A fourth person commented, “Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Lopez’s Wife’s Restaurant Issues Statement

The Baltimore Banner reported that Lopez was from Guatemala and was a married father whose wife Isabel works at Owls Corner Cafe, a Puerto Rican restaurant in Dundalk.

“It’s a sad day for our Owl’s Cafe family,” the restaurant wrote on Facebook. “We are sharing this Go Fund Me link to support one of our work family members who tragically lost her husband and life partner Tuesday morning in the Key Bridge tragedy.”

“He was one of the construction workers at the time the bridge collapsed. As a community and family focused establishment, we cherish the bond we share with our community and customers,” the restaurant continued. “Let’s come together as a family to offer our support during their most challenging times. We are teaming up with churches and members of the community as well to help this family during this difficult time.”

Please say a prayer for the Lopez family and for the families of the other victims of this tragedy during this difficult time.
