It’s been two months since we reported that Suzanne Somers‘ widower Alan Hamel had found love again with the Three’s Company actress’s former co-star Joanna Cassidy. Over the weekend, we reported that Hamel, 89, had confirmed that he and Cassidy, 80, are still going strong.
Now, it’s been revealed that before finding love again with Cassidy, Hamel dated two women who were each married to other men. In fact, he dated both of these women at the very same time!
Somers passed away in October of 2023 one day before her 77th birthday. This came after a 23 year battle with breast cancer. Somers and Hamel had been together for 55 years and married for 46 years at the time of her death.
Hamel has claimed that it was Somers’ final wish that he date other women after her death.
“When we knew the end was near, she said to me, ‘Once I’m gone, I don’t want you to mope around,’” Hamel told Fox News last week. “‘I want you to live your life.’ I told her OK. But then she looked at me and said, ‘I’m serious. I don’t want you to mope around.’ Again, I said OK.”
Hamel ‘Dates’ Married Women
It seems that Hamel wasted no time in making this final wish come true for his late wife. Though he mourned Somers’ death for months, Hamel soon realized that he “missed dating.”
“I thought, I don’t want to be sitting out there with one woman because the message that is going to make it into the media possibly is not going to be a good message,” Hamel explained to The Daily Beast. “So I started dating two women at the same time.”
While this will likely come as a shock to some, Hamel is insisting that these “dates” were platonic in nature.
“There’s nothing romantic going on there,” Hamel claimed. “They’re just really long-term friendly relationships.”
Even so, “dating” these two women still made Hamel learn something new about himself.
“What I realized was I absolutely loved having dinner with two great women,” he admitted. “It was like the three of us experienced dating with different elements involved. When it’s one-on-two, it becomes a whole other experience.”
Hamel Dates Somers’ Former Co-Star Cassidy
Hamel has since found love again with Cassidy, an actress best known for her role in the 1982 Harrison Ford classic Blade Runner.
Cassidy later worked with Somers in the 1985 miniseries Hollywood Wives. The official log-line for the miniseries describes it as being “a three-part, six-hour adaptation of Jackie Collins’ book about a group of very wealthy, attractive, snobbish women who are caught up in the low life and high society of Hollywood.”
Hamel still remembers the dynamic that Somers and Cassidy had on the set of the miniseries.
“Suzanne really liked her a lot, and Suzanne also was a great professional. So the two of them got along great,” Hamel recalled to People Magazine. He went on to say that both Somers and Cassidy avoided a lot of the nonsense that comes with being in Hollywood.
“She and Suzanne spent quite a bit of time together during the production of that miniseries, and I was there a lot, almost every day, and so we reconnected and that was it, period,” Hamel stated.
Hamel Feels ‘Blessed’ To Be With Cassidy
These days, Hamel and Cassidy are still going strong.
“It just happened naturally,” Hamel told People of their bond earlier this week. “I’m blessed. I’m grateful for that. And I’m grateful for the relationship that I have with Joanna. It’s very special.”
Though he’s happy with Cassidy, Hamel has made it clear that he’ll never forget Somers.
“My house is loaded with the pictures on the wall of Suzanne, and Suzanne is everywhere to be found in this house, and I feel good about it, but I also am very sad that she is gone,” he concluded. “But she did say, ‘We will reconnect after you crossover.'”
Losing a spouse is one of the most difficult things that someone can go through. We applaud Hamel for having the courage to put himself out there again romantically. In the end, it’s clear that this is exactly what Somers would have wanted.
