We previously reported that Suzanne Somers‘ widower Alan Hamel had found love again with the late Three’s Company actress’s former co-star Joanna Cassidy. Now, Hamel and Cassidy are celebrating their one year anniversary as they mark a major milestone in their relationship.
Hamel And Cassidy Living Together
Hamel, 89, told Daily Mail that he and Cassidy, 80, have officially started living together!
“I started commuting to Los Angeles to be with Joanna and she started commuting to Palm Springs to be with me,” said Hamel. “I would describe us as living together ‘light.’ And when she needs a few days alone at her home, she’s OK that I see my girlfriends, who are only good friends, no romance.”
Hamel went on to say that Somers, who died in October of 2023 one day before what would have been her 77th birthday after a decades-long battle with breast cancer, would be supportive of his relationship with Cassidy.
“When Suzanne passed, she made it clear that I should not be moping around and find love again at a time that was right for me,” Hamel explained.
Hamel and Cassidy, who is best known for appearing in the 1982 movie Blade Runner, actually met decades ago when she was interviewed by him on his eponymous talk show The Alan Hamel Show in the 1970s.
Cassidy went on to co-star with his wife Somers in the 1985 miniseries Hollywood Wives. The official log-line for the miniseries describes it as being “a three-part, six-hour adaptation of Jackie Collins’ book about a group of very wealthy, attractive, snobbish women who are caught up in the low life and high society of Hollywood.”
Hamel Falls In Love With Cassidy
In his latest interview, Hamel opened up about how he fell in love with Cassidy.
“After Suzanne passed in 2023, I was living alone for the first time in my life. And although I didn’t like it, I accepted that being alone was my reality going forward,” Hamel recalled. “My son, Stephen Hamel, a movie producer, met a woman at a screening and suggested to her that she and my dad would enjoy one another.”
“When Stephen told her his dad’s name, Joanna said that she had guested on my talk show in Canada in 1978. Plus she and Suzanne got to know each other doing the miniseries Hollywood Wives in 1985,” he continued.
Sparks flew as soon as Hamel and Cassidy met up.
“We got together and instantly found great resonance between us. Our first date lasted three days,” Hamel gushed. “This was a new experience for both of us. Joanna had not dated for many years nor had I.”
Now that he has Cassidy, Hamel is happy with where he is in life.
“I don’t think of the past very much with the exception of my 55 years with Suzanne,” Hamel stated. “And I don’t think of the future very much since I have no idea what that will be. But I am totally involved and thinking about my greatest asset, the time and today.”
“I do not know where our relationship is going,” he admitted. “But I am so grateful and blessed to have Joanna in my life along with my extraordinary family.”
Hamel And Cassidy ‘Love To Date’
Hamel went on to talk about what exactly has made him click with Cassidy.
“We really love to date,” he explained. “Sometimes, it’s casual at a local joint with great food. Sometimes we go dancing at a bar with great people watching and live music. And within seconds, Joanna goes into her zone and starts dancing. The dancers around her stop dancing and stare at this woman who is soaking up all the light in the room.”
‘Then, there is the night when we get all dressed up, have a cocktail at Big Al’s Bar and head out to one of my two favorite restaurants,” Hamel concluded.
Hamel and Somers were married for 46 years, and they were together for over half a century. Needless to say, losing her has been extremely difficult for Hamel. While it may be surprising to some that he’s found love again with one of her former co-stars, we can’t help but think that Somers would indeed be supportive of this relationship.
