New details have just come to light about Dolly: An Original Musical, which is about the life of the country music legend Dolly Parton.
Dolly: An Original Musical
Dolly: An Original Musical will be debuting in Nashville, Tennessee this summer. The show will begin its run with a preview performance at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on July 18. The official opening for Dolly: An Original Musical is August 8. Additional shows will then run through August 18. The musical will then move to Broadway, where it will debut sometime in 2026.
“Dolly Parton’s career is nothing short of extraordinary,” read the official statement. “With over 3,000 songs written and 25 No. 1 hits, Dolly has firmly cemented her place in music history. But how did this ‘Backwoods Barbie’ rise to become a Living Legend?”
That’s what we’re dying to find out!
Parton, 79, appeared at the Fisher Center herself on Tuesday. There, she said that she “always wanted to do my life story as a musical.”
“I wanted to see it done while I’m still around, to be able to oversee it and make sure that it’s done properly in a way that I would want to see it, rather than to wait till I’m gone and let somebody else decide how they think it should be done,” Parton explained.
Why Now?
When asked why she decided to do the musical now, Parton told Variety, “Well, I ain’t getting no younger, but as I tell my husband, I ain’t getting no older either — 21 and a half, you know? I’ve outlived so many plastic surgeons.”
Parton went on to say that the show will include hits we now and new original music. The songs will also include “a lot of the country instruments,” like mandolin and fiddle.
“I think they’ll appreciate me taking Nashville to New York with all those country sounds,” she continued. “And when I had a chance to do something bigger and broader where I thought, ‘Oh, I’m gonna get to have an orchestra — that’s gonna be great if I can have strings on this and that.’ It was exciting and fun for me to write the new stuff.”
The musical will feature three actresses playing Parton at different stages of her life.
“I wish I had three of me a lot of times, the way I work,” Parton said with a laugh.

Parton Dreamed Of Doing A Broadway Show
Last year, Parton spoke out to say that she’s always dreamed of making a Broadway musical about her life
“Right now, I’m working on my life story as a musical, and so going on Broadway and opening my show on Broadway, that’s been a biggie in my mind for many, many years,” she said in January of 2024. “That’d be the one that I want to make certain I get done while I’m still kicking, while I’m around to stay involved in it.”
Parton has had a truly incredible life. That’s why her musical is sure to be one for the ages. If you’re as big of a Parton fan as we are, be sure to check out her musical as soon as you can. This one will definitely not disappoint!
