Earlier this year, we reported that the country music legend Dolly Parton was working on a Broadway show about her life. Now, Parton has announced that she’s holding an open casting call in the hopes of finding the perfect woman to play her in Dolly: An Original Musical.

Could that person be someone you know?

Parton Announces Casting Call

“I want to give you the chance to help me bring my story to Broadway — and maybe even play me!” said Parton, 78.

“This show is a celebration of my music, my life and all the amazing people who’ve been with me along the way,” she continued. “We’re looking for talented performers who can capture the spirit of my journey, whether you’re an experienced theater professional or an undiscovered gem with that little special something.”

An official press release for the show states that the musical is looking for “performers of all ages to portray Parton at different stages of her incredible life.”

Application Process

Applicants are asked to send in a one-minute video of themselves singing their favorite Parton song. (Be original people, don’t pick Jolene!) They must then post it on social media alongside the hashtag #SearchForDolly. Once they’ve done this, all applicants have to do is complete the application form on the musical’s site.

The application window closes on January 12, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Anyone who receives callbacks will be invited to come to New York City to continue on with the audition process.

“So, what are you waiting for? This might be your moment to take center stage and step into the spotlight,” Parton concluded with a smile. “Break a leg!”

Parton’s Excitement Over This Show

Parton has been open about just how excited she is about this Broadway show.

“Right now, I’m working on my life story as a musical, and so going on Broadway and opening my show on Broadway, that’s been a biggie [goal] in my mind for many, many years,” she told People Magazine back in January.

“That’d be the one that I want to make certain I get done while I’m still kicking, while I’m around to stay involved in it,”she added.

Parton further elaborated on this Broadway show in June.

“I’ve been writing my life story as a Broadway musical for several years and I’m proud to announce we are finally developing ‘Hello, I’m Dolly – An Original Musical’ for the Broadway stage,” she said at the time.

‘You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry…’

Parton went on to say that the show will have “many original songs.”

“You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll clap, you’ll stomp, it truly is a Grand Ol’ Opera,” she continued. “Pun and fun intended. Don’t miss it.”

Dolly: an Original Musical will include music and lyrics written by Parton. The book for the show was written by Parton and Maria S. Schlatter. The duo previously worked together on television projects like the Emmy Award-winning Christmas on the Square.

Portraying Dolly Parton onstage would truly be the role of a lifetime. We can’t wait to see who ultimately gets to play this highly coveted part!
