On Tuesday morning, the singer Miley Cyrus sat down with Monica Lewinsky for an episode of the podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky. During their discussion, Cyrus opened up about just how difficult it was to navigate fame back in 2013.

Cyrus’ Difficult 2013

It was in 2013 that Cyrus, now 32, released her album, “Bangerz,” which included her hit song “Wrecking Ball.” For that song’s music video, Cyrus shocked the world when she licked a sledgehammer while swinging on a wrecking ball naked.

That same year, Cyrus performed nearly nude at the VMAs, where she also infamously twerked on Robin Thicke. Before long, her antics took a toll on her family in a way that left Cyrus devastated.

“That was the time where I just got hit so hard and I was so embarrassed,” Cyrus recalled.

“There was even a time where my brother and sister didn’t want to go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me,” she continued.

Cyrus has five siblings: Brandi, 38, Trace, 36, Christopher, 33, Braison, 31, and Noah, 25. She is the daughter of the country music star Billy Ray Cyrus and his ex-wife Tish.

“I remember my brother at one point he was saying, ‘I don’t judge you, but you could understand how hard it is for me to go to school, and you be my sister,'” Cyrus recounted. “I was a hard sibling to have as a little girl, so I was like ‘All right we’re even.'”

A ‘Really Hard’ Time For Cyrus

Cyrus went on to admit that this was a “really hard” time for her.

“I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally,” she said. “If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me because they didn’t want to be with a woman [whose] sexual expression part was not for them. It was like shared with the world.”

“So, like, guys, when I would try to date, when I was dating, or who I was engaged to at the time, that didn’t work out because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only,” Cyrus added.

Cyrus confessed that it was difficult to “go home and see my dad and like look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed.”

Thankfully, Cyrus has since managed to bounce back from this. She is currently sober, and she maintains a close relationship with her family to this day.

Cyrus’ Relationship With Liam Hemsworth

This comes one week after Cyrus opened up about how she tried to save her relationship with the former Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth. They first started dating in 2009 and had a notorious on-again-off-again relationship for the next 10 years. They married at the end of 2018, only to divorce months later in August of 2019.

While appearing on the “Every Single Album” podcast last week, Cyrus revealed that “Bangerz” caused her and Hemsworth to break up at one point.

“When me and Liam split up the first time with ‘Bangerz,’ it was because it was like, I was this provocateur and it was highly sexualized,” Cyrus said.

That’s why Cyrus went a different direction with her 2017 album “Younger Now.” Indeed, by then, she and Hemsworth were back together.

“And so, for ‘Younger Now’ ― the album ― the reason I kind of like played into this innocence was because I think that was a way to keep and a way to stay [innocent],” she explained.

Cyrus Wanted To ‘Keep A Happy Home’

Cyrus remembers her train of thought being: “If I’m younger now, if I’m less awake as this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep a happy home.”

However, with that album, she “didn’t know how to fully do it. Because I was also balancing the sobriety thing because I wasn’t getting fully sober yet.”

“And so I was like, well, ‘I’m safe and I’m clean and I’m wearing all white and I’m singing songs about nature,'” Cyrus continued. She added that she was “just trying to find a persona that could keep my personal life intact.”

“My plan was this time, I didn’t want the relationship to fall apart. I wanted it to stay intact,” Cyrus concluded. “And the reason why it didn’t work during ‘Bangerz’ was because of that.”

Cyrus certainly has had an interesting life and career! We’re glad to see that she seems to have put her wild days behind her, and that she seems to have gotten her life together. Good for you, Miley Cyrus!
