Over the past few months, rumors have been swirling that Barack and Michelle Obama are heading for divorce. These claims allege that Barack and Michelle have been living “separate lives” for quite some time.

On Wednesday’s episode of her new podcast IMO, which she hosts with her older brother Craig Robinson, Michelle revealed a surprising joke that Barack made in the wake of her mother’s death last year. Indeed, the joke will likely do little to put the Obama divorce rumors to rest.

Barack Tells Michelle ‘You’re Next’

Michelle, 61, was left devastated when her mother Marian Robinson died in May of last year at the age of 86. As she grieved this major loss, Barack took the opportunity to make a callous joke rather than comfort his wife during this tragic time. Shockingly enough, Barack told Michelle “you’re next” after her mother passed away.

“I guess if anything, with mom’s loss, I think that that — thank God you’re my big brother and I have a husband who’s older,” Michelle told Craig, 63. “Barack was saying, you know, ‘Well, you’re next up.’ I was like, ‘I’m not really ready to be next up.'”

Michelle reacted to this by snapping back at Barack, telling him “‘You’re next up and Craig is next up.’ I delegate that power to you.”

Needless to say, “you’re next” was likely the last thing that Michelle wanted to hear in this moment of grief. Michelle went on to talk to her brother about the massive impact their mother’s death has had on her.

“That’s really when you become an adult, is when your parents are not in that spot of managing and maintaining,” Michelle explained. “It’s a major shift in your life.”

“I don’t care how old you get. Mom and dad are mom and dad,” she added. “Even when I was taking care of mom, I still gotta listen to her. I can sort of boss her around but in the end, she’s my mother.”

Michelle Is ‘Transitioning’ To ‘Next Phase’ Of Her Life

This comes days after Michelle revealed that she is in “therapy” as she is “transitioning” to the “next phase” of her life. Many felt that she could be eluding to marriage struggles and a potential divorce with these comments.

“At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know?” Michelle said while appearing on the Jay Shetty Podcast. “I’m 60 years old, I finished a really hard thing in life with my family intact. I’m an empty nester. You know my girls are in — they’ve been launched. And now for the first time, as I’ve said before, every choice I’m making is completely mine.”

“I now don’t have the excuse of, ‘Well my kids need this,’ or ‘my husband needs that’ or ‘the country needs that,'” she continued. “So how do I think about this next phase, and let me get some help.”

Obama Divorce Rumors

Rumors have been swirling for months that the Obamas are heading for divorce. These rumors escalated back in January, when Michelle didn’t attend the funeral of Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of Donald Trump. Instead, Barack had to attend these events alone. Michelle was the only living former First Lady to not attend the events, which raised some serious eyebrows.

“I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people,” political commentator Meghan McCain said on reporter Tara Palmeri’s podcast at the time. “I’m not talking about TMZ, I’m not talking about Perez Hilton, although I love him, he’s my friend.”

“I’m talking about like very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing that the Obama divorce rumors are true,” she added.

“We’ve heard that for a long time,” replied Tara, who has long covered Washington politics. “Like I just heard that they live separate lives.”

Listen to Meghan and Tara talk more about this in the clip below.

Michelle has attempted to shoot down rumors that she is divorcing Barack. Since launching her IMO podcast two months ago, however, many have noticed that she has used it to complain about Barack seemingly every chance she gets.

It’s clear that the joke that Barack made in the wake of Michelle’s mother’s death certainly didn’t go over well with the former First Lady. Michelle bringing this up now will definitely do little to make the public believe that all really is well in the Obama marriage.

Only time will tell if the Obama marriage actually stands the test of time!
