When the late great Queen Elizabeth passed away back in September of 2022 at the age of 96, Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle was reportedly asked to stay away from her deathbed by his father, King Charles. Now, the reason why has finally been revealed.

Meghan Was Asked Not To Come To Queen’s Deathbed

Even though Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals at the beginning of 2020, they still always planned to be at the Queen’s deathbed together when it ultimately came time. However, when the Queen unexpectedly died at her Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, Harry made his way to her side alone.

Harry and Meghan were in the United Kingdom for a series of charity events when the Queen’s health suddenly took a turn for the worse. Despite this, Meghan didn’t make the journey to Scotland with her husband.

At the time, a spokesperson for the couple claimed that Meghan didn’t go due to a “change of plans.” Reports quickly came out suggesting that the then-Prince Charles had asked Meghan to stay away, with him claiming that the same had been asked of Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton.

In a new biography of King Charles, however, it’s been revealed that Kate was never actually told to not come to the Queen’s deathbed. Instead, Kate made the decision to stay home herself.

Kate Was Never Asked To Not Come To Scotland

In his new book “Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story,” the Daily Mail writer Robert Hardman reveals that Kate chose to stay in England because she wanted to support her three young children as they started at a new school. Indeed, that week was the first day at school at Lambrook School for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Charles then used Kate’s decision as an excuse to calm Harry down after he became irate that Meghan was being asked not to come to the Queen deathbed. At the time, Charles thought that the Queen had days to live, rather than mere hours.

That’s why he was determined for Meghan not to show up, as he wanted to avoid family conflicts. Instead, Charles wanted the family to be able to focus solely on saying goodbye to the Queen.

Harry Admits This Calmed Him Down

In his memoir “Spare,” Harry admitted that he instantly calmed down when he was told that like Meghan, Kate had also been asked not to come to the Queen’s deathbed.

“Meg and I looked at flight options,” Harry wrote. “The Press started phoning; we couldn’t delay a decision any longer. We told our team to confirm: We’d be missing the WellChild Awards and hurrying up to Scotland.”

“Then came another call from Pa,” Harry continued. “He said I was welcome at Balmoral, but he didn’t want…her. He started to lay out his reason, which was nonsensical, and disrespectful, and I wasn’t having it. ‘Don’t ever speak about my wife that way.'”

This led to Charles claiming to his younger son that the same had been asked of Kate.

“He stammered, apologetic, saying he simply didn’t want a lot of people around. No other wives were coming, Kate wasn’t coming, he said, therefore Meg shouldn’t. ‘Then that’s all you needed to say,'” Harry recalled. “By now it was mid-afternoon; no more commercial flights that day to Aberdeen. And I still had no response from Willy. My only option, therefore, was a charter out of Luton. I was on board two hours later.”

The Queen sadly had to spend her final years dealing with the stress of Meghan and Harry leaving the royal family. She then had to contend with them bashing the royals in various interviews. That’s why many would definitely agree that it was for the best that Meghan wasn’t allowed to come to her deathbed. In the end, it appears that the King likely made the right call on this one!
