Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, has returned to social media for the first time in five years. A body language expert has since spoken out to claim that Meghan may have made this move in an attempt to follow in the footsteps of her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William.
Meghan Returns To Instagram
Meghan, 43, returned to Instagram on Wednesday with a thirty second video showing her running on the beach near her home in Montecito, California. It was reportedly filmed by Harry, 40.
Wearing all white, Meghan giggled as she drew “2025” in the sand. The video had no caption. It should be noted that the comments are also turned off on the video. This means that nobody has the chance to praise or criticize Meghan for her social media return.

Body Language Expert Weighs In
Body language expert Judi James told Global News that Meghan may have returned to social media in an attempt to “control the narrative,” something she’s been known to be eager to do in the past.
“Her dilemma might have been that a lack of direct communication can lead to speculation and rumour, while some direct chats will allow her to control the narrative again,” James added.
James could not help but compare Meghan’s video to a three-minute video that Kate, 42, released back in September. Kate used this video to announce that she has completed her chemotherapy treatments after battling cancer.
“Catherine’s stunning video with William and their children (released in September 2024) might have been the toe-dip in the water that proved it is possible to be royal and to share or reveal your emotions in a way you might not be able to do in public life,” James said.
Which is a good point to think about. Consider how much pageantry and careful consideration must go into any public statements by the royals.

James believes that Meghan is trying to send a message with her own new video.
“It looks like a very confident but playful Meghan is re-opening that Pandora’s box that is social media here, posting an enigmatic little video that is more celebrity in mood than royal,” James said. “The gap in her personal social media use seems to have been about privacy but here she looks happy but a little coy about opening up those doors again.”
Meghan And Harry’s Social Media History
After their marriage in 2018, Meghan and Harry were part of the @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account, which also included Kate and William, 42. Meghan and Harry left this account back in 2020 when they stepped down as senior royals and moved across the world to Southern California, where they remain today.
Meghan had previously teased a return to Instagram in 2022.
“Do you want to know a secret? I’m getting back … on Instagram,” Meghan told The Cut at the time.
It’s unclear why exactly this return took years after that to actually happen, however.
Given how poorly they’ve treated the royal family, Meghan and Harry are seen as controversial personalities, particularly by internet users. It will certainly be interesting to see how Meghan’s online return goes over with social media users in the weeks to come.
