The pop star Katy Perry has spent the past few months desperately trying to save her career amidst relentless backlash over her Blue Origin space flight. It’s even been reported that Perry’s career has been “ruined” by this controversy.
Now, things have gotten even worse for Perry. On Friday, she was left dangling in mid-air during a concert due to a terrifying malfunction.
Perry’s Terrifying Onstage Malfunction
Perry, 40, was performing her song “Roar” in San Francisco, California on Friday, July 18 as part of her Lifetimes tour. During the song, Perry was sitting on a flying butterfly prop when it suddenly malfunctioned mid-air. This left her hanging on for dear life as she narrowly avoided falling into the audience at the Chase Center.
Perry stopped singing and looked visibly panicked as the malfunction occurred. She let out a yelp and nervously looked up at the wires that the butterfly was attached to. Perry was able to compose herself within a few seconds, and she quickly continued the song.

Unfortunately for Perry, many fans had little sympathy for her on social media.
“Having things like this fly over the crowd is a huge safety hazard for the artist AND the fans,” one social media user commented. Another added, “She handled it like a pro, barely skipped a beat, but it should’ve never happened.”
“She’s an astronaut she can deal with a little turbulence,” a third user wrote.
Perry Ambushed Onstage
This isn’t the only strange occurrence that has happened during Perry’s Lifetimes tour, which she kicked off on April 23. Last month, Perry was left shocked when a fan stormed the stage during a concert in Sydney, Australia.
The male fan approached Perry onstage as she performed her song “Hot N Cold.” He proceeded to grab her arm before she managed to swerve to avoid him as she kept singing. The man then began to dance onstage. Finally, security guards managed to apprehend the man and remove him.

Perry’s Blue Origin Backlash
This comes after a difficult few months for Perry. It all started when she travelled to space on the Blue Origin flight on April 14. Perry was joined by CBS Mornings host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez. They spent just eleven minutes in space before returning to Earth.
Unfortunately for each of them, however, the mission has been met with tons of ridicule and backlash. Indeed, all of the women have been hit with backlash over the flight. However, Perry has taken the most heat by far. According to Daily Mail, Perry’s career has been “ruined” by this controversy.

Perry Responds
As the backlash reached its peak, Perry herself took to social media to address the hate that she’s been receiving.
“When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed,” she stated. “What’s real is seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth. I find people to lock eyes and sing with and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that.”
“I’m not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary, I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but… I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level UNLOCKS,” Perry concluded.
Given the precarious status of Perry’s career at the moment, the malfunction that occurred mid-concert on Friday is the last thing that she needs from now. Only time will tell if Perry is able to bounce back from all of this!
