The singer and actress Jennifer Lopez served as a judge on American Idol from 2011 until 2016. In a new interview, she’s opening up about the chilling warning that she was given before taking this gig.

Lopez Was Warned Against Taking American Idol Job

Lopez, 55, told Interview Magazine that her team warned her against taking the job on American Idol, as they feared it would kill her career.

It’s something we’ve heard before about doing reality TV.

J Lo did her best to justify her decision.

“I’d done all these big movies and made these albums and now they’re asking me to do reality TV,” Lopez said. “I’ve had kids and I haven’t worked for a couple of years. ‘American Idol’ was a big show at the time.”

Lopez went on to say that her decision-making process “really comes down to, what do I think I can bring to something?” However, she admitted that  “all of my advisers were like, ‘Don’t do this, you’re going to be reduced to just a reality star.’”

“It was looked down upon,” Lopez explained, adding that she was told, “Don’t do that or nobody will ever hire you for a movie ever again.”

“And I was just like, ‘No. I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen. I think I have something to contribute,'” she continued. “I love music and I love mentoring people, and I wanted to share the things that I knew about the business. So it became more about, ‘What do I think I can do with this?’”

Lopez’s Risk Paid Off

Sure enough, Lopez was right. After her first two seasons, Billboard described her appearance on the show “the most impressive reality-TV-based rejuvenation of a music career ever.”

Further, she’s appeared in eight movies since 2016, often doubling up as a producer.

“When I’m choosing things, even if they seem like not the best idea to everybody else, if I feel it in my gut that it’s the right thing to do, nobody can talk me out of it,” Lopez stated.

Another decision that Lopez said that she was warned against was doing a residency in Las Vegas.

“It’s the same thing when I went to Vegas,” she recalled. “They were like, ‘That’s where entertainers go to die.’ And I was like, ‘No.’ And it launched me into a whole new part of my life.”

Sounds like J Lo has a gut she can trust!

Lopez Trusts Her Own Instincts

Throughout her career, Lopez has always turned down offers that didn’t feel right to her, even when pressured to take them.

“There’s been movies like that,” she concluded. “Sometimes they’ll offer you tons of money to do a commercial or a private show, and you’re just like, ‘No.’ They’re like, ‘Please do it! We all want the commission!’ And I’m like, ‘I can’t do that.’”

Trusting her own instincts has certainly paid off for Lopez over the years. We can’t wait to see where her career takes her in the years to come!
