Goldie Hawn is opening up about her long break from acting, explaining that her absence from screens has nothing to do with retirement and everything to do with the material she’s been offered.
Hasn’t Found a Script

The Oscar‑winning star, who hasn’t appeared in a film since 2020’s The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, says she simply hasn’t found a script that sparks the excitement she’s looking for.
Speaking to People, the 80‑year‑old actress said she still loves the craft but isn’t interested in taking roles just for the sake of working.
Hawn, whose career stretches back more than six decades, said she has read plenty of potential projects in recent years but hasn’t felt a strong connection to any of them. She explained that she wants something that feels fresh, funny, or surprising — something that makes her think, “I have to play this woman.”
She said, “It has to do with the content.”
“Acting for acting’s sake, taking things… I’ve read a lot of shows, a lot of scripts that I didn’t like or I didn’t think I’d fit.”
Looking Back
Hawn added that she’s proud of the career she’s already built and doesn’t feel pressure to chase roles that don’t resonate with her.
She said she looks back on her body of work with gratitude and doesn’t feel the need to force a comeback unless the right opportunity presents itself. Still, she made it clear she hasn’t closed the door on acting and would happily return if the right script landed in her hands.
She went on, “The one thing about acting is that I’ve done it, and I had a great career, and I honor that.”
Hawn added, “I would love to get a material that could actually be like, ‘Oh my God, I want this so bad. This is so funny. She’s so crazy. She’s so interesting.’ But I haven’t come across it.”
“If somebody came up with a really cool, funny script… I think it would be great.”
The Cactus Flower star, who won an Academy Award early in her career, has headlined some of the most beloved comedies of the last half‑century, including Private Benjamin, Overboard, and Death Becomes Her.
Kate Hudson

Goldie is the mother of actress Kate Hudson, and the 47-year-old star recently admitted that she’d love to work with her mom.
Kate has enjoyed huge success in Hollywood, starring in movies such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, You, Me and Dupree, and Song Sung Blue – but she has not yet managed to work with her own mom.
Speaking to E! News, Kate explained, “It probably will never happen but we’ll see, put it out there.”
Kate jokingly suggested that her family’s dysfunctional ways might come to the fore on a movie set.
She said, “It would be like Arrested Development.”
Kate also explained that she has an undying “respect for every actor in our family.”
She shared, “My mom and I were talking about this. Life, it goes fast, and you just gotta take every second in and every moment I get with my family and my parents is something I’m going to be very present in.”
