The Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn has been one of the biggest stars in Hollywood for decades. Her daughter Kate Hudson, an Oscar-nominee in her own right, has joined her in the last few decades by becoming an A-list star herself.
In a new interview, Hudson is revealing the powerful advice that Hawn gave her years ago about surviving in Hollywood.
Hawn’s Advice For Hudson
“Thank God I had a mom who said, ‘Make your own way,’” Hudson, 46, told Variety. “When you become successful in the arts — and what I mean by ‘successful’ is when you’re making other people a lot of money — people really like to put you in a box. But nobody becomes an artist to be put in a cage.”
Hawn’s longtime partner Kurt Russell, who she’s been with for over 40 years, had some advice for Hudson as well.
“‘Love what you do because you love it. Don’t love it because you rely on it,'” Hudson recalled Russell telling her. “Because it’s so hard to rely on this business — it’s going to throw you all over the place.”
Earlier this year, Hudson revealed she nearly “divorced” her parents before landing her breakout role in Party of Five.
“I had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult,” Hudson recalled. “My mom was like, ‘No, never happening,’ but then I got the Party of Five and it was so great.”
Back in February, Hudson opened up about how close she is to Hawn, 79.
“I live seven blocks from my mom now, and she comes over every day,” Hudson told the Los Angeles Times.

Hudson’s Hollywood Success
Hudson went on to say that she even turned down the chance to appear in one of Russell’s films because she didn’t want to be “defined” by her famous parents.
Thankfully, it didn’t take long for Hudson to achieve Hollywood success on her own. Indeed, she was only 21 years-old when she was nominated for an Oscar for her work in the 2000 movie Almost Famous.
Though she ultimately lost that award to Marcia Gay Harden for Pollack, Hudson remains one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood today. In fact, Hudson is so successful that many fans forget that she has such famous parents!
This year, Hudson is garnering Oscar buzz once again for her new movie Song Sung Blue. While she would love to get some Oscar love again, Hudson is determined not to let the highs and lows of her Hollywood career define who she is.
“I felt lucky that I knew the peaks and valleys of this roller-coaster ride,” Hudson explained. “One minute you’re the hot ingénue, and you’re up here. And then the next minute you’re wondering why you’re not in the conversation for certain things that you know you can do. It’s never been something that has defined my value.”
Hudson’s Health Perspective On Hollywood
In the end, Hudson’s bond with Hawn and Russell has given her a healthy perspective when it comes to Hollywood.
“As you get older, you realize you’re the only one who makes the decision not to allow yourself to be in that cage,” she concluded. “It means having to make fearless and risk-taking decisions that are really, really hard to do when you have a status quo that’s safe.”
