The Hollywood icons Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together for 43 years. Despite this, they have never gotten married. In a new interview, Hawn is revealing the secret behind their decades-long relationship.
Hawn And Russell’s Long-Lasting Relationship
According to Hawn, 80, “freedom” is what has kept her and Russell, 75, together for all of these years.
“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don’t feel penned in,” Hawn told People Magazine. She added that she and Russell are the “right match.”
“We don’t always agree on stuff, which is fine,” Hawn explained. “We’re both very spontaneous. [Our relationship] fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together.”
Hawn shares two children, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, with her ex-husband Bill Hudson. Meanwhile, Russell shares son Boston Russell with ex-wife Season Hubley. Hawn and Russell are parents to their son Wyatt, who they welcomed to the world in 1986.
While appearing on the Conan Needs A Friend podcast in 2024, Hawn said that the joint love that she and Russell have for their blended family is the “sticking glue” to their relationship.
“We don’t agree on everything,” Hawn admitted. “His politics are different than mine. You know, there’s all these things that could divide you. But the one thing that we have, the greatest thing in God’s world, is our family.
“That is where we thrive and where we have incredible amounts of joy and really focus on that,” she added.
Hawn went on to say that her attraction to Russell has always stemmed from his “focus on the children.”
“He is a family man,” Hawn said of Russell. “I can’t explain it, but he was the one for me. It wasn’t just because he was sexy and handsome and all of those things you get turned on by; it was because he matched my devotion to children to be No. 1. The seduction was really his personality and his focus on the children.”
Hawn’s New Children’s Book
Hawn is currently promoting her new children’s book The After-School Kindness Crew: Pooch on the Loose #1, which hits stores on May 5. The book is described by PEOPLE as “a tender and funny tale meant to teach empathy, kindness and, yes, joy to the next generation.”
Now that she is in her 80s, Hawn is determined to embrace this stage of her life with joy.
“I laugh all the time. . . . It’s kind of a joy for life,” she said. “I have a tickle inside. I have it. I’ve always had it. It’s a gift.”
“I think ultimately every life has to have its sections,” Hawn concluded. “Doing the same thing over and over again for your whole life is not as interesting to me. And I decided at probably 55 or something. …‘What are you going to do for this next part of your life?’ And I knew that there was more out there to learn and to do.”
In the crazy world of Hollywood, it’s rare to find a relationship that is able to stand the test of time. Though they’ve never married, it’s impressive that Hawn and Russell have been able to stay together this long, and they truly seem more in love than ever.
