It’s been two months since the two-time Oscar-winning star Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico mansion. By the time they were discovered on February 26, they had each been deceased for quite some time, and their remains were mummified.
Earlier this week, we reported that Hackman’s autopsy report had been released. Now, Arawkawa’s autopsy results have finally been released as well. Indeed, her autopsy report has revealed some disturbing new details about her untimely passing.
Arakawa’s Autopsy Results
Arakawa’s autopsy has confirmed that she died of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). She passed away in her bathroom days before Hackman also died.
According to her autopsy report, Arakawa had “fluid accumulation in her chest and mild hardening of the vessels that supplied blood to the heart and body at the time of her death.”
Arakawa tested negative for both COVID-19 and the flu. Her body also showed no signs of trauma. At the time of her death, Arakawa had caffeine in her system. However, she tested negative for alcohol and intoxicating drugs. Meanwhile, Arakawa’s carbon monoxide levels were in the normal range.

Hackman’s Autopsy Report
This comes days after Hackman’s autopsy report was released. It found that the actor had “a history of congestive heart failure” and “severe chronic hypertensive changes, kidneys.” According to his autopsy, Hackman had a “bi-ventricular pacemaker” since April of 2019 and “neurodegenerative features consistent with Alzheimer’s Disease.”
“Autopsy showed severe atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, with placement of coronary artery stents and a bypass graft, as well as a previous aortic valve replacement,” Hackman’s autopsy report stated.
“Remote myocardial infarctions were present involving the left ventricular free wall and the septum, which were significantly large,” it continued. “Examination of the brain showed microscopic findings of advanced stage Alzheimer’s disease.”
Hackman tested negative for hantavirus, which is the disease that killed his wife.

Hackman And Arakawa’s Deaths
Officials believe that Arakawa passed away sometime on February 12, which is when she made her final phone call. She died from hantavirus, a rare flu-like virus transmitted through rodent droppings. Officials later discovered that Hackman and Arakawa’s mansion was infested with rats, making it a “breeding ground” for hantavirus.
It’s believed that Hackman survived until February 18, which is when his pacemaker last showed signs of activity. Hackman’s official cause of death was heart failure He was also suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s disease, meaning he may not have been aware that his wife had died in their home. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Heather Jarrell confirmed that it was “quite possible” that Hackman didn’t know that Arakawa had died.
Arakawa had been Hackman’s primary caregiver in his final years. The autopsy results indicate that Hackman’s Alzheimer’s may have progressed to the point where he could no longer feed himself without Arakawa’s help.
Hackman and Arakawa had been married since 1991. Though they had no children together, Hackman was the father of three kids from a previous marriage.
Hackman retired from acting in 2004. For the final two decades of his life, Hackman stayed out of the public eye, choosing to instead live a reclusive existence with Arakawa in Santa Fe.
Now that the autopsy results for both Hackman and Arakawa have been released, the public has gotten most of the answers about their deaths that they’ve been looking for. May they both rest in peace.
