The comedian and former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has announced that she is leaving Hollywood after her upcoming and presumably final Netflix special.
DeGeneres Is ‘Done’ With Hollywood
While filming Ellen’s Last Stand…Up in Santa Rosa, California earlier this month, DeGeneres confirmed that she is “done” with Hollywood. She said this after a fan asked her if she’s considering making a movie or going on Broadway.
“Um, no,” replied DeGeneres, 66, according to Fox News. “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
DeGeneres’ comedy special is set to drop later this year, but no date for this has been set.
“Thank you for still caring!” DeGeneres continued. “Let me catch you up on what’s been going on with me since you last saw me. I got chickens.”
“Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean,” she jokingly added. “Next time, I’ll be kicked out for being old. Old, gay and mean, the triple crown.”
DeGeneres then shifted to discussing how her fame has changed since she began her career in entertainment.
“I used to say, ‘I don’t care what people say about me,’” she said. “Now I realize I said that during the height of my popularity.”
“I am many things, but I am not mean,” she later stated.
DeGeneres’ Toxic Workplace Scandal
DeGeneres was clearly referring to the toxic workplace scandal that derailed both her talk show and her reputation back in 2020. The scandal included allegations of racism, sexual harassment, bullying, and intimidation on the set of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
The scandal was particularly harmful to DeGeneres’ image because she ended every show by telling her viewers to “be kind” to each other.
“As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t,” DeGeneres said at the time. “That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show Ends
The Ellen DeGeneres Show came to an end in 2022 after 19 seasons. At the time, DeGeneres claimed that her decision to end the daytime talk show had nothing to do with the scandal.
“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” she alleged.
When her upcoming Netflix special was released back in May, DeGeneres confirmed that she would be addressing her toxic workplace scandal in it.
“To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes this is my last special,” she said in a press release.
It will certainly be interesting to see how DeGeneres’ Netflix special goes over with fans when it finally comes out!
