Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, 69, has been one of the most popular stars in Hollywood for decades. That’s why it just came as a sad surprise that he hinted that he may be retiring soon.
Washington Hints At Retirement
Washington is currently promoting the new Ridley Scott movie Gladiator II. In it, he plays Macrinus, and while he enjoyed working on the film, he’s not sure how many more he has in him.
“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley,” Washington told Empire magazine.
Washington, who has been heralded as one of the best actors of his generation, did not elaborate on exactly how many more film roles he sees himself taking.

Washington Talks Gladiator II
Washington previously teamed up with Scott, 86, on the 2007 movie American Gangster. This film won a slew of awards, and they are hoping that Gladiator II will have the same success.
“We had a great go-round the first go-round and here we are. He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film…He’s an inspiration,” Washington stated. “We should all want to feel like that at 86.”
Scott has also made it clear that he’s excited about the new movie.
“It’s as good as the first one,” Scott told People Magazine earlier this month. “I didn’t say better. It’s as good.”
Washington has been a mainstay in Hollywood for nearly fifty years. He’s been nominated for ten Oscars and won two of them. Washington first won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the 1989 movie Glory. He then won the Best Actor in a Leading Role trophy for 2001’s Training Day.
Washington’s last Oscar nomination came for the 2022 Shakespearian movie The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Washington Previously Hinted At Retirement
Washington has previously hinted that he is considering stepping away from acting.
“The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera,” Washington said back in July. “I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.”
Retirement was something that Washington also hinted at in a 2021 interview.
“I’m in the yellow leaf of my career. To be quite honest, looking to do other things. So as far as acting, it’s gonna have to be an extreme challenge for me to be interested,” Washington told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “I’ve been talking to one or two of the top directors in the business, and we’re talking about maybe doing something. There’s not that much left for me to do as actor.”
Thankfully, Washington isn’t going anywhere just yet. We can only hope that given his talent, he ends up changing his mind and continues acting for many years to come.
