It’s been over a year since the former Friends star Matthew Perry was found dead in his hot tub in October of 2023 at the age of 54. Afterwards, an autopsy found that Perry died due to the “acute effects of ketamine.” The specific cause of death was cited as accidental drowning.
Sadly, we already knew that Perry was being enabled by those around him, but just how much we weren’t sure.
Now, chilling new details about Perry’s death have come to light, and it’s not pretty.
Perry Got Shocking Number Of Ketamine Shots
In the new Peacock documentary Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, it’s been revealed that Perry was given 27 ketamine shots in the last three days of his life.
Yes, you read that number correctly.
U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said in the documentary that Perry was given the 27 ketamine doses by “people who should have known much better.”
“Dr. Plasencia was very clear in text messages… that he saw this as an opportunity to make a lot of money in a short amount of time, and he allegedly did just that,” Estrada said.
This was a reference to Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who is one of the five people who have been charged over Perry’s death. Dr. Plasencia is still awaiting trial. So is Jasveen Sangha, who has been dubbed the “Ketamine Queen.” Their joint trial is set to begin next week. Each of them have pleaded not guilty.
Perry’s Personal Assistant Pleads Guilty
In August of last year, Perry’s live-in personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death. He is facing up to 15 years in prison, and will be sentenced in May.
“In the past, we used to call these things overdose deaths and do more blaming of the victim,” Estrada explained. “We don’t do that anymore. We blame the drug dealers, the drug sellers, for taking advantage of those addiction issues to cause death or serious injury. That’s why we bring these cases.”
“The big takeaway from this case is that when people involved in reckless activity, whether that be drug dealing or other activity, cause the death of others, there needs to be accountability,” he added.
We agree – especially when the title “Doctor” is involved.

Perry’s Final Hours
According to Iwamasa’s plea agreement, Perry had him administer his first ketamine shot of the day at around 8:30 am on the morning of his passing. Four hours later, Iwamasa injected Perry once again while the actor was watching a movie. Just forty minutes later, Perry shocked Iwamasa by asking him to give him yet another ketamine shot.
“Shoot me up with a big one,” Perry allegedly said. Once the shot was given, Perry told Iwamasa to prepare his hot tub.
Once the hot tub was ready, Iwamasa left to run some errands. He returned to find Perry face down in the hot tub. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but it was too late to save Perry, and he was declared dead.
If this timeline is correct, that means the other 24 shots were given in just a two-day period.
Perry had been open about his battles with addiction to drugs and alcohol for years. At the time of his death, he had been undergoing weeks of ketamine therapy for depression.
Perry is best known for starring on the sitcom Friends from 1994 until 2004. He is the first of the six main cast members to pass away. While it’s sad that Perry is gone, he will always live on through his incredible and hilarious work on Friends, and through the memories of his real-life friends and family.
Rest in peace, Matthew Perry.
