Over the past few months, rumors have been swirling that Barack and Michelle Obama are heading for divorce. These claims allege that Barack and Michelle have been living “separate lives” for quite some time.
Barack just fueled these rumors in a big way when he was spotted dining at a ritzy Los Angeles restaurant with his two daughters. Michelle, however, was noticeably absent from the meal.
Barack Eats With Daughters Without Michelle
Barack, 63, was seen on Friday night having dinner at the swanky restaurant Hamasaku, a Japanese-Californian spot in West Los Angeles. He was joined by daughters Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23.
The restaurant specializes in sushi. The menu features such expensive items as $35 caviar and $38 wagyu steaks. Hamasaku has been a favorite restaurant of the Obama family for years. Despite this, Michelle, 61, did not join her husband and their daughters for this meal.
Obama Divorce Rumors
This comes after months of rumors alleging that the Obamas are heading for divorce. These claims escalated back in January, when Michelle skipped both the funeral of Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of Donald Trump. Michelle was the only living former First Lady to not attend these events. Instead, Barack had to attend these events alone.
“I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people,” political commentator Meghan McCain said on reporter Tara Palmeri’s podcast in January. “I’m not talking about TMZ, I’m not talking about Perez Hilton, although I love him, he’s my friend.”
“I’m talking about like very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing that the Obama divorce rumors are true,” she added.
“We’ve heard that for a long time,” replied Tara, who has long covered Washington politics. “Like I just heard that they live separate lives.”
Listen to Meghan and Tara talk more about this in the clip below.
Barack And Michelle Sound Off
Last month, Barack told students at Hamilton College that he is in a “‘deep deficit with my wife.” He suggested that this is because of the stress that the presidency put on his marriage.
“I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” he confessed.
Meanwhile, Michelle has been using her new podcast IMO, which she hosts with her older brother Craig Robinson, to complain about Barack and their marriage seemingly every chance she gets. On a recent episode, Michelle claimed that people “don’t realize that, in long term relationships, you’re going to have deep, deep dips.”
“I tell people – and folks think that this is harsh – it’s like you’re going to have a bad decade. I’ve been married to my husband for 30 plus years,” Michelle stated. “I mean, the truth is if you add it all up, even the year, if the odds were you’re going to be married to your partner for 50 years and 10 of those years could be bad, you’d sign up for it. You’d sign up for it, and that’s really how it works out.”
Megyn Kelly Fires Back
The commentator Megyn Kelly, however, was not having any of this.
“It’s not. I’ve been married for 17-and-a-half years and not one was bad. I think she and he married the wrong people,” Megyn said. “Every word she says about Barack Obama is negative… Every time she opines, it’s something that reflects poorly on him – how he’s insensitive, how he’s not a talker, how he doesn’t know how to relate to people, he doesn’t keep the same schedule as she does. And now we’re talking about how you can have a bad decade in a marriage.”
“She loves to tell us she hated Barack for a good decade, but please teach me how to have a successful relationship with someone that you clearly respect and admire,” Megyn added. “Every time she is on the air, it’s like, ‘I’m dragging this ball of dead weight behind me. His name is Barack Obama. He’s bringing me down.'”

The Obamas have attempted to shoot down rumors that they’re divorcing. However, actions speak louder than words, and their actions certainly indicate that all is not well in their marriage.
