Last month, we reported that the Oscar-winning Hollywood star Angelina Jolie was preparing to flee America after her bitter eight year divorce battle with Brad Pitt finally ended. Now, Jolie is speaking out to bash America in a free speech plea as she gets ready to leave the country for good.
Jolie Attacks America
On Sunday, Jolie was at the San Sebastián Film Festival to promote her new movie Couture. There, Jolie was asked what she currently fears as an artist and an American. Jolie paused, letting out a deep sigh as she considered her answer before saying, “It is a very difficult question.”
“I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country,” Jolie, 50, told Variety. “I’ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life… My worldview is equal, united, and international.”
“Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous,” she continued. “These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. These are very, very heavy times we are living in together.”
Jolie Preparing To Flee America
This comes one month after insiders revealed that Jolie is the latest celebrity who is preparing to move abroad. Though she filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016, their divorce wasn’t finalized until December of 2024. Now that their youngest children are turning 18 next year, Jolie will finally be free to leave the country as she wishes.
Jolie and Pitt, 61, are parents to six children: Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 17.
In anticipation of the twins’ 18th birthday, Jolie is already preparing to sell her Los Angeles mansion. She currently lives in the iconic Cecil B. DeMille estate located in the ritzy Los Feliz neighborhood. The Girl Interrupted star purchased this home back in 2017.
“She hasn’t officially put the house on the market, but unofficially it’s available. Ideally she’d like to do an off market sale anyway,” the source concluded. “She’s getting her ducks in a row because the moment Knox and Viv turn 18 she’ll be leaving town for good. She can’t wait.”
Jolie Is Only Still In L.A. Because Of Her ‘Divorce’
Jolie was born and raised in Los Angeles as the daughter of the Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight. Despite this, she has long been open about her eagerness to flee Hollywood and live abroad. Last year, Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter that she was only still in Los Angeles “because I have to be here from a divorce.”
As for where she planned to go, Jolie said in that interview, “I’ll spend time visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world.”
Earlier this month, Jolie was spotted house-hunting in London, England. She’s currently there filming her new movie Anxious People.
“Angelina is in London filming a movie and one of the first things she did when she got there was get in touch with a real estate agent to start showing her properties,” said an insider close to Jolie.
The source went on to say that Jolie “has a lot of friends” in the British capital. Indeed, it seems that both Jolie and her oldest son Maddox, 24, “love London.” The insider also claimed that they see it as being a “quick trip” to New York City, where Jolie’s fashion venture Atelier Jolie is based.
“She also loves Paris and that’s another option, but right now London is the frontrunner,” the source explained.
Celebrities Fleeing America
It’s felt like celebrities are fleeing America in droves in recent months. Indeed, stars like Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, and Rosie O’Donnell have all moved overseas and settled in the United Kingdom.
While they’ve put on a brave face publicly, it’s also been reported that they’ve learned the hard way that life outside of America isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.
In the end, Jolie shouldn’t be surprised if she ends up missing the comforts of America once she is living abroad. Only time will tell how this turns out for her!
