The Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke, 98, has long credited his longevity to consistently working out. Now, in a new interview, Van Dyke is opening up about how exactly he manages to stay so young with his 52 year-old wife Arlene Silver.

Van Dyke Reveals How He Stays Young

When asked how he stays so youthful despite being nearly 99 years-old, Van Dyke replied by saying it’s his love for swimming and working out with Silver.

Van Dyke explained that he goes to the gym three times a week.

“And I’ll be going to the pool as soon as this is over!” he added, according to The Express.

However, getting to 98 years old has its downfalls. When asked what the “best part and the worst part” of living so long is, Van Dyke responded by saying, “Losing friends, for one thing, almost everybody’s gone.”

“Short-term memory gets to be a real problem,” he continued, adding with a laugh, “I remember what I did when I was 15, but I can’t remember what I had for breakfast.”

Van Dyke’s Previous Comments On Fitness

Van Dyke previously opened up about his love for working out in another interview last month.

“I’ve always exercised,” Van Dyke told E! News. He went on to say that as people get older, “they get a little stiff and sore, and it begins to hurt to move. So they just stop moving all together, and you start to age fast.

“I’ve always exercised three days a week,” he explained. “I work out with weights and the treadmill also and try to keep that up. You can’t stay young forever. You can stay young-minded forever. That’s why I never grew up.”

Earlier this year, Van Dyke spoke out to urge others to work out as well.

“I still go to the gym three days a week and work out,” Van Dyke told Yahoo News. “And I advise everybody to do that, because that’s what ages people — it’s just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer.”

Other Ways Van Dyke Stays Young

Staying positive and optimistic is another thing that Van Dyke says helps him stay young.

“I think a person’s temperament is born with them,” he said. He added that he knows “some people who just have a sour outlook on life. I never have had that. I’m very fortunate in that because I think it’s inborn, an optimistic point of view. Yeah, I see the bright side of everything.”

Finally, Van Dyke believes that having a loving wife decades younger than he is helps to keep him youthful as well.

“Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me, that works!” he gushed. “My positive attitude, I get that from my wife.”

Van Dyke And Silver’s History

Van Dyke and Silver married in 2012. They had met at the 2006 SAG Awards, where she was working as a makeup artist. Despite their 46-year age gap, Van Dyke and Silver have a deep love for one another.

“We don’t feel the age gap,” Van Dyke once said. “I’m emotionally immature and Arlene is very wise for her age, so we meet in the middle.”

Van Dyke also has no regrets about this marriage.

“It’s one of the smartest moves I ever made,” he once told Parade. “She makes me happy.”

Van Dyke is set to turn 99 in December. He’s clearly doing something right, so we would all do well to take his advice!
