Back in 2022, the Hollywood star Valerie Bertinelli went through an extremely public and bitter divorce with her ex-husband Tom Vitale, who she was married to since 2011. In a surprising new interview, however, Bertinelli is opening up about why she “can’t just blame him” for how bad their marriage got.
Bertinelli Discusses Bitter Divorce
“I can’t just blame my ex-husband for a toxic, horrible marriage,” Bertinelli, 63, said while appearing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” earlier this week.
“It’s not his fault. What led me to that? Oh, childhood! That’s the stuff I got to start working on,” she added.

US Magazine reported that back in February, Bertinelli took to social media to call Vitale a “narcissist.”
“I am over it. I’m over the narcissist. I’m long over the narcissist,” she said at the time. “What I’m working on is, what made me tolerate the intolerable?”
In October of last year, Bertinelli talked about how she found some of the positives from her devastating split from Vitale.
“I think because that divorce was so wicked, and it’s really brought me to my knees, but I think of that as a gift because I get to learn so much about myself through this,” she said, according to Fox News.
“I get to learn so much about my character. I get to learn so much about my healing. I get to talk to my inner child more, so this wicked part of my life is actually very healing for me,” Bertinelli continued. “I get to choose every day whether I’m thankful and in gratitude or whether I just want to be b—- and just scream. And I choose to be grateful and be thankful because I also get to learn so much.”
Bertinelli Wasn’t Open To Love Again
Bertinelli’s divorce from Vitale was so bad that she said in a 2022 interview that she was not open to ever finding love again.
“I have some trust issues,” Bertinelli said at the time as she began to cry. “I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone.”
“I am gonna be more happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone,” she continued.
Bertinelli, who was previously married to Eddie Van Halen from 1981 until they divorced in 2007, went on to explain that her reasoning behind this was that she “can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I’m sure I’m going to have to get past.”
“Divorce sucks,” she concluded.
Bertinelli’s New Boyfriend
Thankfully, Bertinelli revealed last month that she has in fact found love again with a man ten years her junior, saying that this was “not supposed to happen.”
“I was not going to date. I was going to die alone with my six cats and my dog and be very happy alone,” Bertinelli admitted. “He was not supposed to come into my life and here he is. He’s 10 years younger.”
Bertinelli went on to describe her new boyfriend, who she has yet to name, as being “amazing.”
“He would like to think he’s complicated and brooding, but he’s thoughtful and kind and ridiculously talented,” she gushed. “He’s an amazing writer. He’s gorgeous, like so hot. He does it for me. Big time. We all have our type. Like he’s just hot.”

After everything that Bertinelli has been through, she deserves all the happiness in the world. It’s good that she’s taking some responsibility for her past marriage falling apart, and that she’s moved on with a new man who brings her joy!
