Sydney Sweeney is one of the top stars in Hollywood today.
Yet, producer Carol Baum recently said that she doesn’t understand the hype around Sweeney, as she is “not pretty” and “she can’t act.”
Seriously?
‘I Don’t Get Sydney Sweeney’
“How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman,” a Sweeney representative said in a statement. “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful.”
The statement added, “To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character.”
Baum, who produced the films like Fly Away Home and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, made her remarks about Sweeney during a Q&A with the audience after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers.
“There’s an actress who everybody loves now, Sydney Sweeney,” Baum said. “I don’t get Sydney Sweeney.”
Baum went on to say that she watched Sweeney’s 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You because she “wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her.”
Instead, Baum found the movie “unwatchable.”
She said to her classroom at USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she teaches, “Explain this girl to me. She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?”

‘Terribly Ugly Comments’
E! News reports, “After the event, New York Times film critic Janet Maslin, who moderated the post-screening conversation with Carol, attempted to clarify the intention producer’s comments amid the backlash. Agreeing that Anyone But You ‘IS unwatchable,’ she explained on X, formerly Twitter, ‘We brought up Anyone But You because it’s been the rare smash hit rom-com at a time when they aren’t working. Not because we wanted to take cheap shots at anyone.'”
“However, many including a producer on Sydney’s new film Immaculate, chimed in with a whole lot of praise for the ‘White Lotus’ alum,” the report noted.
“I’ll enlighten Ms. Baum that two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney is not only one of the most talented actresses I’ve worked with,” Teddy Schwarzman wrote on X, “but also incredibly smart, kind and humble.”
He continued, “I’m not sure why someone who claims to still be a producer would make such terribly ugly comments.”

Baum has since tried to backtrack, telling TMZ that she wishes she’d never bashed Sweeney in this way and that publicly attacking an actor “usually isn’t her style.” She also said that she’s received tons of hate mail from outraged fans of Sweeney after her comments about the “Euphoria” actress went viral.
Sweeney is currently one of the biggest IT girls in Hollywood, so going after her was probably not the best idea. Other bigwigs in Hollywood should take notice of what happened to Baum, as it’s clear that Sweeney is here to stay, and that messing with her is a big mistake!
