The former NFL star OJ Simpson, who many feel got away with the 1994 murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman, died on Wednesday night after a battle with prostate cancer at the age of 76. Now, new details have emerged about Simpson’s final days, and they were far from easy.

Simpson’s Final Days

Daily Mail reported that a “frail and unrecognizable” Simpson demanded that the dozens of friends who came to his home in Las Vegas, Nevada to say their goodbyes to him in his final weeks sign non-disclosure agreements before entering his home.

Sources told TMZ that this pertained to every single person who visited Simpson, including friends, family and even medical personnel who were helping him through hospice care. One insider claimed that 30 to 50 people saw Simpson in his final weeks, and no phones were ever allowed in the room with him.

Simpson’s final months were difficult for him, as he had been in and out of the hospital since late 2023. He even contracted pneumonia at one point, and his final hospital visit was earlier this year.

Simpson’s Death

Last Friday, one of Simpson’s hospice care workers noticed that Simpson had taken a turn for the worse and notified his family that the end was near for him. They all then flocked to his bedside, and when he actually died, he was surrounded by his four children, including his 38 year-old daughter Sydney and 35 year-old son Justin, who he shared with Brown.

Simpson raised Sydney and Justin after he was controversially acquitted of the murder of their mother and her friend. Sydney and Justin have never spoken publicly about their mother’s murder, and it is unclear how close they were to their father, as they have chosen to live private lives as adults. People Magazine reported that Sydney and Justin both work in real estate in Florida.

Simpson’s children announced his death on Thursday morning in a brief statement.

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” they said in a statement. “He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.”

“During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. -The Simpson Family,” they added.

Simpson’s Cancer Battle

Simpson’s death came as a shock, as he had kept his prostate cancer battle private. Just two months ago, Simpson posted a video to social media in which he claimed that his “health is good,” which the public now knows was a lie.

“I find that it’s something that a lot of men don’t talk about,” Dr. Samuel Haywood, a urologist specializing in prostate cancer, previously told USA Today. “Men can be very stoic, and they don’t like to talk about their health issues.”

“Masculinity is, in part, based on self-efficacy, and things like losing control of your bladder or experiencing pain when urinating or having a difficulty with sexual functioning can really impact men’s self-esteem,” added Erik Anderson, a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in men’s issues and anxiety. “To admit that difficulty in functioning, it really feels like talking about a very vulnerable part of yourself.”

It’s clear that the final months of Simpson’s life were difficult both physically and mentally for him. This may come as somewhat of a relief to the millions of Americans who believe that he got away with two brutal murders thirty years ago.
