Joy Behar, 80, Recalls Being ‘On Death’s Door’ – Thinking ‘I’m About To Die’

On Tuesday morning’s episode of “The View,” co-host Joy Behar shocked the panel by revealing that she was once “on death’s door” in the 1970s, when an ectopic pregnancy left her “about to die.”

Behar’s Near-Death Experience

Decider reported that Behar kicked off the story by saying that she was “on the ground” outside of a funeral because she “could not get up” due to “terrible abdominal cramps” that she was suffering from, adding that “It was horrible.”

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg could not help but burst out laughing while picturing this scene, but Behar was not having any of that reaction.

“Don’t laugh yet, it’s not really a funny story,” she fired back.

Goldberg tried to ease the tension by saying that she was only giggling at the thought of Behar “laying on the ground.”

“This is my motif throughout my life, I’m always falling,” Behar replied.

Behar then returned to her story by saying that she was in “excruciating pain” when her doctor told her it had “something to do with menstrual cramps.”

“He gives me painkillers. It disguises the pain and disguises what it was,” she explained. “And then I am at death’s door … In excruciating pain. I’m about to die, actually, because it was an ectopic pregnancy.”

Behar Nearly Dies

According to Behar, an ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo grows in the fallopian tube until it bursts, causing you to “bleed internally” and ultimately “die if you don’t catch it.”

Behar previously revealed how her ectopic pregnancy turned out last summer, when she said she was finally “rushed to the hospital” when her symptoms became too much for her.

“The doctor the next day said, ‘We almost lost you,’” she recalled in August of last year, according to Page Six. “I was in the situation where I could go to Beth Israel Hospital, and they took care of it there.”

Behar is the mother of one child, her daughter Eve, with her ex-husband Joseph Behar. Eve is reportedly a ceramic artist who has no interest in television, despite her mother trying to get her into the medium.

“I figure, why not use nepotism? Everyone else does,” Behar recalled in January of 2022. “But she said ‘No, I don’t like it.’”

Behar Turns 80

Behar was one of the original hosts of “The View” when it premiered back in 1997, and though she was fired in 2013, she was brought back two years later and has remained on the show ever since. She celebrated her 80th birthday in October of last year, but despite this, she has “no plans” to retire.

“I just signed a contract so I’ll be here for a while,” Behar told People Magazine around the time of her birthday. “I have no plans to retire.”

“It’s really, you know, something that is an important show in many ways,” she went on to say of the ABC talk show. “Sometimes I don’t believe that, as I’ve been here since the beginning, but we’re the most-watched show in daytime. Most-watched! I’m happy to be a part of it. So no, I’m not going anywhere. I’m having a good time.”

While we would never wish an ectopic pregnancy on anyone, it certainly turned out well for Behar. It remains to be seen how much longer we’ll all have to suffer through hearing about her radically liberal opinions on “The View” every day.
