Big Return Possible At WrestleMania + Is Rey Mysterio Retiring

There’s talk that a big return might be possible at this year’s WrestleMania. Plus, given his current program, is Rey Mysterio retiring there?

Big Return Possible At WrestleMania

The biggest show of the year is a week away and always full of surprises, so is a big return possible at this year’s WrestleMania?

We’ve already seen reports that WWE is bringing in Randy Orton for the weekend. Given it is the Hall of Fame as well, it could simply be for that?

But, in years past, we’ve seen plenty of big surprises and returns at WrestleMania, and there’s talk of another one.

Or, there was talk, and where that goes now remains to be seen.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, there has been discussions about a big return for Big E possible at this year’s WrestleMania.

Now, while Meltzer is reporting that, it’s worth noting a few things.

One, the report indicated a return and reunion for New Day. There is an issue there, as Kofi Kingston just had ankle surgery and is out for a bit.

For another, Big E’s in-ring future remains unclear. It’s been just over a year since he broke his neck.

During his recovery, he’s had a few setbacks, and it’s not clear what they may have done to any timetable.

It had also been noted by previous reports that his doctors wouldn’t even discuss a return timeframe until his one year anniversary-which again, only just passed.

Personally, I could see WWE bringing Big E in for the weekend, but specifically to show up and get a pop. Maybe to do a pre-show panel.

It seems too soon to expect Big E could be competing or physical, based on everything we’ve heard.

Is Rey Mysterio Retiring

Given what his current program entails, is Rey Mysterio possibly retiring at WrestleMania?

According to Meltzer, no.

Seeing how things are progressing, it’s understandable why some might speculate about a possible retirement.

The first, and perhaps biggest clue? Rey Mysterio is the headline inductee into the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame.

While we’ve seen plenty of Hall of Famers come back to work extended time-Goldberg and Edge to name a few-it seems Rey is the first to be inducted while currently active.

The honor is well deserved, and perhaps WWE wanted to give him a big California ceremony (though LA and San Diego aren’t next door neighbors).

Currently, Rey will take on his son, Dominik Mysterio. The WrestleMania 39 match was confirmed on Friday’s SmackDown.

While I don’t necessarily like it, I feel like we are still going to get a Hall of Fame induction that turns physical.

I don’t like using the HOF for that, for what its is worth.

That being said, while Meltzer has firmly said no to the retirement rumors, but I do think there’s a way there.

For one, the HOF nod makes us think that. And I can totally hear Rey saying “if I can’t beat Dom, I will call it a career”.

Though, for something that significant, I would think we’d get a bigger build knowing the stakes.

For what it’s worth, the notion of a retirement was also discussed by WrestleVotes:

John Deegan

Introduced to professional wrestling in the 1980's thanks to Superstars and Saturday Night's Main Event, John's passion for the medium was reborn thanks to ECW in the 90's. A former in-ring "talent" with a career 0-2 record, he finds it more rewarding, and far less painful, to write about wrestling now.
