The Hollywood legend Helen Mirren, 77, has revealed that she suffered a broken bone while performing her own stunts for the upcoming movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Mirren Suffers Broken Bone

“I did some of my own stunts, but I broke my finger,” Mirren said, according to Fox News. “I was incredibly brave and didn’t say anything or complain because I wanted to be a real ‘stunty’ person.”

Mirren went on to reveal that she had some surprising stunt-driving experience in film.

“I drove stunt-driving, believe it or not, in The Queen,” she said, referring to the 2006 film that she won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II.

“You may think that doesn’t count as stunt driving, but I had to do a shot where, my fellow actors will know, the camera was set up all up in the front of the car, so I couldn’t see anything… I had to drive quite fast through… made up roads… in Scotland,” Mirren added. “I think that characterizes as stunt driving.”

Mirren Is ‘Not A Big Superhero Type Person’

Mirren also explained why she wanted to be cast in this “sweet and funny” superhero sequel.

“Loved the first Shazam… I am not a big superhero type person, but I loved the idea of it and happily signed up for the second one… It is great,” she confessed. “Don’t ask me about the plot, it’s too complicated!”

“We are angry goddesses wearing unbelievably heavy costumes,” she continued. “It was very hot and uncomfortable and in fact, Lucy [Liu] said at the end of the first day’s shooting, ‘They are trying to kill us,’ in all seriousness.”

The character Mirren plays in this movie is Hespera, who is the daughter of Atlas that attempts to take back the powers of Shazam, played by Zachary Levi. It is set to hit theaters next month, and you can check out a trailer for it below.

Unlike many Hollywood stars, Mirren has allowed her hair to naturally go gray without dying it. In a 2021 interview, she said that this was an “easy” transition for her because she’d always had blonde hair, according to Prevention

“The women of my age who have made the leap [to gray] recently look so spectacular,” she said, adding that “people should do whatever makes them feel comfortable.”

Mirren Brings Prince William To Tears

Earlier this week, Mirren paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth, who died back in September at the age of 96, in a way that was so touching that it drove Prince William to tears.

“Cinema at its best does what Her Majesty did effortlessly – bring us together and unite us through a story. Your Majesty, you were our nation’s leading star,” Mirren said, according to Entertainment Tonight

“BAFTAs relationship with Her Majesty was longstanding and BAFTA would not be what it is today without her loyal support,” she continued. “In 1953 her coronation broadcast had the world watching, from that time, she was unquestionably the nation’s leading lady. But was mysterious as a silent film star.”

After chronicling the late monarch’s bond with Hollywood stars from the “Golden Age” to the “Blockbuster” era, Mirren said, “Her Majesty was front row for it all.”

Mirren is a true Hollywood legend, so it comes as no surprise that she’s so devoted to her craft that she wants to perform her own stunts. We can only hope that her finger injury heals properly so that she can get back to acting as soon as possible!
