The world is still in shock after it was revealed last night that the former “Cheers” star Kirstie Alley had died suddenly at the age of 71. Now, new details have emerged about Alley’s death as the exact cause has been revealed.

Alley’s Cause Of Death Is Revealed

Daily Mail reported that in announcing Alley’s death, her two children only said that she died of a cancer that was only “recently discovered.” Alley’s reps have since confirmed to People Magazine that this cancer was colon cancer, which has long been known as the “silent killer” because the symptoms take awhile to become obvious.

Though colon cancer is 90% treatable if caught at stage one, only one third of patients are diagnosed at that point, and it isn’t known at this time what stage Alley’s cancer had reached by the time of her diagnosis. Before her death, Alley was being treated at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, not far from her home in Clearwater.

“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,” Alley’s family said of her death. “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

Alley’s Career

Alley became a household name back in 1987, when she was cast as Rebecca Howe on Cheers, winning both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for the beloved role in 1991. She later took home another Emmy for her work in the television movie “David’s Mother” in 1994.

Always up for a good time, Alley competed on two seasons of “Dancing With The Stars,” and she came in second place on “Celebrity Big Brother” in the United Kingdom, according to Page Six. Earlier this year, Alley competed on “The Masked Singer,” and you can check out her performances and her big reveal on that show in the video below.

Ted Danson Honors Alley

Tributes have been pouring in for Alley after her death was announced, with one of the most touching coming from her former “Cheers” co-star Ted Danson.

“I was on a plane today and did something I rarely do. I watched an old episode of Cheers,” Danson told E! News. “It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposes to Kirstie, who keeps saying no, even though she desperately wants to say yes. Kirstie was truly brilliant in it. Her ability to play a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown was both moving and hysterically funny.”

“She made me laugh 30 years ago when she shot that scene, and she made me laugh today just as hard,” he continued. “As I got off the plane, I heard that Kirstie had died. I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children. As they well know, their mother had a heart of gold. I will miss her.”

Alley was a true legend who brought joy to millions of fans throughout her decades-long career. She will be dearly missed, and one can’t help but feel that she is gone too soon.
