‘Yellowstone’ Star Kevin Costner Reveals If He’d Ever Run For Office – ‘I’m Disappointed’

The fifth season of “Yellowstone” premiered last night, and it detailed the process of Kevin Costner’s character John Dutton being sworn in as governor. To promote the series, Costner gave an interview in which he revealed whether or not he’d ever consider running for office himself.

Costner Talks Politics

“I know how hard it’s going to be on him,” Costner, 67, told USA Today, referring to Dutton. “His heart is at the ranch, not trying to find middle ground with people. That’s going to be problematic. He has a lane that he operates in that is not as expansive as some would want it to be. And he won’t change.”

When asked if he’d ever run for office, Costner replied, “No, I don’t think there’s any reason for me to run.”

“Though I wish the people that did run had a bigger vision and more of a morality about how they see the country evolving. I’m disappointed,” he added.

Costner On Supporting Liz Cheney

Costner recently threw his support behind Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) when she ran for reelection, and though she did not win, the actor said he had no regrets about endorsing the outspoken critic of the former President Donald Trump.

“Just because you lose doesn’t mean you’re done; it doesn’t mean you’re even wrong,” he said. “I was clear that (Cheney) probably wasn’t going to win her election. But I wanted to let her know, as a citizen, how much I appreciated her brave, clear-headed stance.”

Costner went on to say that he doesn’t mind the fact that many “Yellowstone” fans turned on him for supporting Cheney.

“I didn’t really care how the cookie crumbles, that people that liked me now don’t like me,” he said. “That’s OK.”

Though Costner has had tons of success in Hollywood, he’s not taking the success of “Yellowstone” for granted.

“I’m not naïve; I’m aware that it’s a No. 1 show,” he explained. “You’re always happy when something’s received well. I’ve had things that I thought were pretty good that weren’t exactly hits. But you cannot be driven by the ratings; you just appreciate that there’s an audience.”

“I was only going to do one season, but I’ve done this many,” Costner continued. “I give everything I can to what I’m doing. But the moment I feel that it’s not right, I’m just going to step away.”

Costner Knew ‘Yellowstone’ Would Be A Success

In another interview with the Associated Press, Costner talked about why he thought “Yellowstone” would be a hit after he signed on to star in it.

“I thought it had a chance to be relevant, in that this work is still going on in America and most people kind of take it for granted how stuff ends up at their dinner table,” he said. “We intuitively know, and we don’t really know.”

“The show is able to highlight at times the beauty of ranching, and it certainly talks about how difficult it is,” he continued. “We’re set in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I think the idea of mountains and rivers captured people’s imagination. But it’s a working ranch. It’s how it’s still done. I think it spoke well of that, with its kind of heightened sense of drama.”

We can’t wait to see how the rest of this season of “Yellowstone” plays out in the weeks to come!

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
