The 56th annual Country Music Awards are set to take place next Wednesday, and to mark the occasion, we’re taking a look back at one of the most awkward moments from the CMAs ten years ago in 2012.

Allen Recalls Shelton Encounter

Whiskey Riff reported that the Hollywood star Tim Allen of “Home Improvement” and “Last Man Standing” fame later recalled in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that he was sitting behind the country music star Blake Shelton at the 2012 CMAs. Allen had no idea that Shelton was married to his fellow country music singer Miranda Lambert at the time, and this would end up coming back to bite the comedian in a big way.

“I’m watching right behind Blake Shelton, who wouldn’t move, and he’s the largest man on the planet, I can’t see anything. I’m actually irritated with the guy,” Allen recounted. “He turns around, I happened to be a fan of that show ‘The Voice,’ and I happen to be a fan of his on that show so we started a conversation.”

That’s when things took a very awkward turn.

Things Get Awkward

“Then a woman comes up, and you probably know this, and everybody else knows it, but I didn’t know this… Miranda Lambert,” Allen said. “So she’s up there rocking out with the ‘Crazy’ one, some song about her being nuts and tattoos and booze.”

“I was like, ‘I love this woman’ and he turns around and says ‘Boy, I’d love to tap that’ and I said ‘Me too!'” he added. “And then I get that look. And he goes, ‘That’s my wife!’ And like a comic I said, ‘Let me finish…’ So yeah, we haven’t spoken since… but she’s really good.”

Shelton would go on to win Entertainer of the Year that night for the first time in his career. He later divorced Lambert in 2015 after four years of marriage, and he has since married the singer Gwen Stefani in July of last year. Lambert has also found love again with her husband Brendan McLoughlin, who is a police officer in New York City.

Allen’s Marriages

Allen was undoubtedly kidding about his comments about Lambert, given the fact that he has been married to his wife Jane Hajduk since 2006. He was previously married to his college sweetheart Laura Deibel from 1983 until they divorced in 2004. Allen had one daughter with his first wife and another daughter with his second, and he’s admitted that he prioritized his career over his family during his first marriage.

“I was gone so much in my first marriage, I love the moments when I engage with my youngest daughter now,” he told Parade in 2011. “It’s not my thing to sit on the ground and play tea party, but I’ll do it because it’s a moment that will stick with me forever.”

Shelton and Allen are two of the most down-to-earth celebrities that there are in this entertainment industry these days, so it’s fun to see that their paths crossed during an awards show years ago, even if it was in the most awkward way possible!
