To be the man, you have to beat the man. But to be a world champion, you need to prove it. Glover Teixeira will try to do that this Saturday night.
Teixeira makes his first light heavyweight title defense at UFC 275 vs. Jiri Prochazka from Singapore.
The veteran claimed the title last October with a second round finish of Jan Blachowicz at UFC 267. That marked the sixth consecutive win for Teixeira, with five of those being finishes.
Since falling to Corey Anderson all the way back in 2018, Teixeira has looked like one of the top 205-pound fighters in the world. He got back on track in early 2019 with a first round submission win vs. Karl Roberson.
A few months later, he submitted Ion Cutelaba to make it 2-for-2. Teixeira closed out 2019 with a third win, this time holding off Nikita Krylov via split decision.
He opened 2020 with a fifth round TKO vs. Anthony Smith and submitted Thiago Santos a few months later in the third round.
At uFC 267 in Abu Dhabi, Teixeira picked Blachowicz apart before locking in a rear-naked choke. The win was his 33rd all-time in 40 career fights, with 10 of those being submission wins.
Prochazka comes in having won both of his UFC fights. He stopped Volkan Oezdemir in the second round at UFC 251 and did the same vs. Dominick Reyes in 2021 for his 28th career win.
The last fighter to best Prochazka was former Strikeforce champion Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal in the Rizin World Grand Prix in 2015.
