The country music star Toby Keith made a truly devastating announcement on Sunday when he revealed that he has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Keith Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

“Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer,” wrote Keith, 60. “I’ve spent the last six months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”

The American Cancer Society states that stomach cancer “begins when cells in the stomach start to grow out of control” and accounts for about 1.5% of all new cancers annually diagnosed in this country.

“I am looking forward to spending this time with my family,” Keith said. “But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.”

Keith’s Current Tour

Keith is currently on tour performing his new album, and he’s set to do shows in Illinois and Michigan on June 17 and 18. He released “Peso In My Pocket,” which was his first album in five years, back in October. At the time, he said he came up with the songs on this album while he was out running, according to People Magazine.

“I’d look at the song ideas I had in my phone before I started running, and then I would take off,” he said. “Next thing I know, my time would be up, and I’d have been constantly working, grinding gears in my head about the songs. I’d get back and put on my recorder on my phone and I would lay down what I got. It was a great time for me to write.”

Keith Has Been An Advocate For Cancer Patients

Keith has long been an advocate for people with cancer, launching the Toby Keith Foundation, which helps children with cancer, back in 2006. The foundation’s website states that back in 2014, it opened OK Kids Korral, “a cost-free, convenient and comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients receiving treatment.”

“There is no greater gift than keeping families strong and together during a difficult time,” the foundation’s website states. “If we can alleviate stress on a family, encourage a brother or sister and comfort a sick child, then we will make a difference in the fight against cancer.”

Keith’s Rise To Stardom

KBTX reported that Keith rose to 1993 with his self-titled album, and his song “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” on his first album was the first of 20 No. 1 singles.

USA Today reported that Keith has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, and he was recognized as entertainer of the year by the Academy of Country Music two years in a row in 2002 and 2003. The star was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame back in November and recently played the Heroes Honor Festival at Daytona International Speedway.

Please join us in saying a prayer for Keith as he continues to battle cancer.
