Why Did Suzanne Somers Leave Three’s Company?

To this day, many people still wonder why Suzanne Somers left “Three’s Company.” Actually, she didn’t. The Hollywood star Suzanne Somers was shockingly fired from her hit show “Three’s Company” back in 1980. In a new interview, Somers is revealing what got her through this horrifying career setback and why she was fired in the first place.

Why Was Suzanne Somers Fired From Three’s Company?

Somers was fired after four seasons when she simply asked for a pay raise from $30,000 an episode to $150,000, which is what her co-star John Ritter was getting.

“At that time, the men were making 10 to 15 times more than I was,” Somers, 75, told Fox News. “And I was on the No. 1 show. It just seemed wrong because I was clearly being underpaid. And it’s not like I stopped the show. My contract was up. We had a meeting with the lawyers [at ABC] …  But, by then, they had already decided.”

Somers went on to recall the moment she learned she’d been fired.

“I was waiting at home — and remember, this was a time before cell phones, so it felt like an eternity,” Somers recalled. “It was a gray day. And the front door opened in a way that you knew bad news was coming. It was really slow. And I heard my husband going up the stairs really slowly. I met him at the landing.

“He looked at me, shook his head, and said, ‘You’re out. You were gone within the first five minutes when I walked into the meeting,'” she added. “Now, I was out of work and labeled ‘trouble’ only because I wanted to be paid fairly for doing my job.”

Somers fell into a deep depression for months before something finally pulled her out of it.

“I just remember sitting in my living room — same gray, cold day, months later — just thinking, ‘Why?’” she remembered. “And I heard a voice. I think we all hear voices. We just don’t often tune in. But that voice said, ‘Why are you focused on what you don’t have? Why don’t you focus on what you do have? You have enormous visibility. Most of the people on the planet know your name at this point.’”

Somers Rebrands Herself And Starts Selling ‘Thigmasters’

Somers ultimately decided to start selling branded products to boost her income, and that’s when she came upon the “Thighmaster,” which she credits with getting her through this period in her life. She said that she stopped counting how many Thighmasters she sold “after 10 million.”

These days, Somers’ name can be found on all kinds of products, everything from jewelry to protein formula.

“I have over a thousand products,” she said. “Would I have wanted to do it this way? No, but I allowed it to take me and us where it wanted to go. My biggest complaint today is that I work too much. I’m always keeping busy.”

“The pandemic worked for me because we started doing Facebook Live shows and Instagram shows three times a week,” Somers continued. “We start the show with some tequila on ice, and it’s like having a drink together while my husband is running the camera. There’s just so much freedom on the internet than there is on mainstream television. I’m just loving where I’ve been and where I’m heading.”

‘I’m Still Standing’

Somers is still selling Thighmasters to this day, and she’s noted just how far she’s come since her “Three’s Company” firing.

“How did I fare after ‘Three’s Company?’ Well, I’m still standing, and I’m standing strong,” Somers concluded.

Somers’ resiliency is something that can be inspiring to millions of fans from all over the world! God bless her for continuing to show the world that giving up is never an option and that it’s always possible to find a new lane for success.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
