Earlier this month, we reported that the comedian Dave Chappelle had been tackled onstage while performing a standup comedy show that was being filmed for Netflix. Now, his alleged attacker Isaiah Lee has broken his silence about why he chose to do this.

Backstory: Did Will Smith Inspire This Attack On Dave Chappelle?

Lee ‘Triggered’ By Chappelle’s Jokes

Lee claimed to The New York Post that he was “triggered” by jokes that Chappelle told about the LGBTQ community and homelessness. He added that he thinks Chappelle should be more “sensitive” about the jokes he makes.

“I identify as bisexual … and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering,” Lee, 23, said at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. “I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”

Lee went on to say that he’d thought he’d have a “good time” when he attended Chappelle’s show on May 3, but he became angry when the comedian started joking about his past controversies involving the LGBTQ community and homelessness.

“I’m also a single dad and my son is 5,” said Lee. “It’s a struggle and I wanted Dave Chappelle to know it’s not a joke.”

The breaking point came when Chappelle made a joke about pedophilia, which “triggered” Lee because he was molested as a teenager. Find out more about this in the video below.

Lee Calls Himself A ‘Minor Celebrity’

Lee, who is an aspiring rapper, claimed that he was only carrying a replica handgun with a retractable knife that night because he’s a “minor celebrity,” and therefore needs it for protection. However, he claims that he did not take it out during his altercation with Chappelle.

“They spat on me and twisted me as if on purpose,” he added of the security guards that left him with a broken arm and two black eyes. Lee has since been charged with four misdemeanor counts, including battery and possessing a deadly weapon with intent to assault.

While Lee alleged that reports that he suffers from mental health issues are “wrong” and “inaccurate,” his lawyer has said that he is indeed receiving mental health services.

Lee Charged With Stabbing Roommate

Things got even worse for Lee last Thursday, when he was hit with criminal charges for allegedly stabbing his roommate last year. The victim identified Lee as his attacker after the Chappelle incident went viral.

“It was pretty much done,” Lee claimed about the criminal case involving Chappelle. “But it went from me probably only doing six months [in jail] and having to do community service and living in a transitional home … to possibly 15 or more years in jail. My son will be big by the time I get out.”

Lee concluded by saying that he still doesn’t regret attacking Chappelle because this has given him a platform to speak out about homelessness, LGBTQ rights and child sex abuse. He claims that after the attack, Chappelle asked him backstage why he had tackled him.

“I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said,” Lee claimed, to which Chappelle allegedly replied, “Now your story will die with you, son.”

“But he’s wrong,” Lee said. “I’m sitting here talking to you about it.”
