Matthew McConaughey may be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but he and his wife Camila are raising their three young children far away from that world. The Texas native has demonstrated time and again that his feet are planted firmly on the ground. And that’s precisely where he wants his kids‘ as well!

Instead of raising their kids in the superficial world of Beverly Hills, Matthew and Camila made the decision to live in Texas. In a new interview with Fox News, Camila revealed that she has no regrets about raising her children in the Lone Star state, away from the spotlight.

‘It’s Been Great’

“It’s been great,” Camila, 40, said of living in Texas. “It really embodies our belief system, especially the ones I grew up with, like going to church every Sunday, saying ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no, sir.’ I grew up saying those things coming from a family of farmers.”

“For me, being from Brazil and then coming to Texas, I discovered a lot of similarities in terms of what families practice here, especially going to church on Sundays, and being very into the outdoors,” she explained. “It’s been a great transition.”

Camila was born and raised in Brazil, but she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to launch a successful modeling career. In her latest interview, however, she went on to say that she and her husband were miserable when they lived in Southern California.

“We lived in Malibu for many years and having the paparazzi outside our door every day – every single day – when that becomes your normal, you don’t realize how much that’s actually affecting the things you do until you actually leave and get out of it,” she stated. “The kids get to have a private way of growing up. So from that perspective, it was very important.”

Matthew McConaughey’s Mother Moves In With His Family

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Matthew’s 90 year-old mother Kay moved in with his family. While this could have been a disaster for some families, it seems to have only brought the McConaugheys closer.

“We joke about this all the time,” Camila said with a laugh. “Before she was living with us, she had a different perspective on what kind of advice she would give us. Now that she’s living with us, she gives a completely different perspective. She’s softer.”

“I think once you become a grandparent, you become more forgiving in situations,” she added. “Sometimes I’ll be disciplining the kids or having a more stern conversation with them, and I can tell she has that face like, she doesn’t feel good about it. Like, ‘Do you need to do that?’ But, she’s been a great influence in not only our kids’ lives but our lives. She brings so much joy to our household.”

Camila And Matthew McConaughey Have A Normal Family

Though her husband is an Academy Award-winning actor, Camila insists that her family is just like any other.

“Matthew is the one the kids will usually go to [if they want to get away with something],” she said. “But Matthew and I have a pretty good system where we don’t play good cop, bad cop. The kids need to understand that as parents, we are on the same page.”

While their children are their main focus, Camila and Matthew also make sure to carve out quality time with each other.

“I have this thing — we have a tree on our property,” she said. “I sometimes say to Matt, ‘Let’s meet today before dinner and watch the sunset under the tree.’ We’ll just sit under the tree and have a drink together. It’s about sharing those simple little moments together in between everything that’s going on. It’s about those little moments to keep reconnecting.”
